Why not 22-250, 243, or even 25-06?
240 Wby just seems like an eccentric choice for a coyote gun, unless that's what you're going for, in which case, I dig it.
I wouldn't call it over-analysis. I found it to be a very succinct summary of progress in recent cartridge design.
I also love the use of "shit-heel". I need to start using that again.
I agree. It's what I had the most of when I started loading for that gun. I figured I'd make all the mistakes with that and then go to the Hornady I had saved, or buy some Lapua.
They are.
It'll replace every center fire rifle you have, except maybe an AR or a lightweight mountain rifle.
Only problem is nothing about them is cheap. Then again, you only really need one scope, so you can save money on that end.
I was drawn for E2 cow elk the first year I applied.
The next year I applied for M9 cow moose and also drew.
I think your odds are pretty good on cows.
That's really the only advantage the 243 has. Tons of factory ammo options. Means nothing to me. I haven't shot factory rounds through that gun in years.
Or one rifle that will do both with a barrel and bolt swap: https://deserttech.com/srs.php
You can do the barrel swap yourself in just a few minutes with a single hex wrench.
Never mind the calibers they have listed there, you can get a custom barrel in just about any caliber for about the same...
After several thousand rounds, I think my 243 Win barrel on my AR-10 is finally giving up.
I decided to go with a Dracos barrel in 6mm Creedmoor. If you haven’t heard of these, you should check them out: https://www.dracosbarrels.com/
They have a 243 barrel, but it’s a 20 inch. If it was a 22...
Agreed. The best way to piss cops off and to raise their suspicions / heighten the tension of the situation is to not pull over immediately. They see and hear a lot of BS every day, so I don't blame them for not immediately believing them. However, they could have dropped it a few notches...
Exactly.
That can be true if you're comparing a heavy 224 vs a light 6.5, but if you compare 'apples to apples' it's not. For example, here are the heaviest offerings from Sierra for each:
224 - 90 Sierra Match King = .563 G1
6.5 - 150 Sierra Match King = .713 G1
Similar results if you...
I probably say this a lot, but a suppressor will take a lot of recoil out and make it more pleasurable to shoot in a lot of ways.
However, there are some caveats that are particularly applicable to lightweight rifles.
- It adds weight to the rifle, which may be counter to the goals you had for...
224 what?
.224 is the diameter of (most) 22 caliber bullets, for which there are dozens of cartridges (223 Rem, 22-250 rem, 220 swift, 22 Nosler, 224 Weatherby, etc).
I know a guy that shot a wolf-like creature (that looked very much like the above picture) in central SD about a year ago. DNA testing showed that it actually wasn't "enough wolf" to be considered a wolf, so the Feds dropped the case and he even got the pelt back, but there could have been...
Another thing to consider when doing holdovers with a Mildot scope is whether the scope is First or Second focal plane (FFP vs SFP).
If it's a SFP (most hunting-type scopes are), then the dot is only worth 1 mil when the scope is at a certain magnification (usually the highest). With a FFP...
The holdover does change with a 200 yard zero.
If you know your muzzle velocity and the BC of your bullet (most manufacturers list it), you can plug your numbers into Hornadys online calculator: https://www.hornady.com/team-hornady/ballistic-calculators/
It will list your "come ups" in both MOA...
I didn't say it wasn't an issue. I said it's different. Party hunting big game has a much broader impact.
Someone putting an extra walleye in the livewell instead of his buddy doesn't impact my chances of getting a fishing license.
I think others have covered this already, but it's much different because none of the other things you mention are lottery-based. Party hunting encourages people to fill tags for their relatives and buddies that otherwise never would have applied at all, thus diluting the lottery.
Aren't you...
