For the last week around my place, we have noticed trees and bushes turning yellow and loosing leaves. A lilac hedge has pretty much lost all its leaves, a large willow tree has lost almost all its leaves and many more have started turning yellow. Today I drove down to Missouri for work and notice almost all the way down that trees are turning yellow and some had already turned red.

Is this a sign of early fall? Seems early, but can't figure out why over a stretch of 400 miles all the trees seem to be behaving in the same manner.

I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure the changing of the leaves is related to length of sunlight

I think its formation of tanic acid stimulating the formation of a abscission layer between leaf and stem. I wonder what could bring that on early. I seen a few maples totally red in Minnesota last week.

This is pretty much the normal time to start seeing the first ones go. First to go are normally the chokecherries. This pic was taken Jul 28th last year. Seems like the next wave to follow are the trees that are under some form of stress like high water or storms damage and after that point it's pretty much game on.

Depressing --- whats more depressing is how fast it always goes ---- we all look foward to fall fishing and hunting. Bottom line is that you have maybe a 4 weeks of decent fall weather and then if you are limited on the weekends only or days you needed to select earlier - 10 to 1 those days are going to be shitty, rain, wind, snow, or freezing cold.

I'm sure this is "normal" but August sure seemed cooler/more moderate than what I perceive as "normal." Plus, we started getting mice in our garage about 2 weeks ago. Caught 5 in 10 days. They typically don't start until September-ish.

I suppose the joke will be 80s all through October, then snow Nov. 1 and no temps above 32 until June.

Gotta love North Dakota!

I've never been dove hunting without seeing shelter belts, certain plants/bushes/grasses turning.

Seems like we're right on track at my place. Doesn't mean I am prepared for it though, summer is just too damn short around here when it starts in June.

I am going to predict a cold and snowy winter. It was a cool and wet summer so we could assume the pattern will continue.
