Both cartridges kick.. not sure what it is but the kick depends on the gun. I've shot a 7mm in a Browning A-bolt and it would jar your teeth, I had a 300 mag in a Browning A-bolt that wasn't so bad... Composite VS wood stock? Weight? Not sure. As of now I shoot a 300 WSM in a model 70, and it's manageable

Why not just buy both? :D one can never have too many guns right

Yep, even buy two of each. I buy ammo at rummage sales for calibers I don't have that way I have to order me a rifle to use the ammo. Thus far the wife hasn't said a word. My next purchase will be a .308 since I picked up some ammo at a sale. I don't have a 7mm yet but I do have a 300. I like shooting mine and can shoot several rounds a day. Recoil is no problem as I shoot a Winchester SXR. A BAR would be great too. I am not a fan of bolt actions. BTW, never sell or trade a gun. I've done it once in my life and now regret it. For the little I got for the shotgun, I wish I still had it.

I have hunted elk for over 20 years in Wyoming and Montana. I own two 300's and one 7mm remington 700 ADL. Over the twenty years, those I did not get with bow were killed with the 7mm Remington. 99% were killed with one shot. 162 grain boat tail. I have shot one 5X6 Bull elk with my 300 weatherby fixed with a suppressor. still kicked like a mule and twice as loud. I can tell you for a fact that the 7mm will be a very good choice. This has also killed a 12X13 Moose this year as well with a 49 5/8 inch spread. In fact I use it for everything. Not that I don't have different choices I own over 15 long guns but the 7MM is my go to every time. Enjoy

If you handload your ammo get the 300 due to the wider range of bullets available and the compatibility to other cartridges. If not, do as others have suggested and flip a coin.

Wider range of bullets? Go from 195 Berger's to 140 nosler ballistic tips how much wider does a guy need. The 300 is ballistically still trying to catch the 7mm slip in through the wind

The 200 grain plus bullets for the .300 have higher b.c.'s.... just sayin...

Whatever caliber you pick load up nosler partitions and you will be very happy when you are making clean kills without giant messy holes.

probably should go with the 300. 7mm work ok for deer but have been known to bounce off of elk.
