Any Birders here?

Anyone on here use this app for identifying birds, Merlin Bird ID. A friend of mine showed it to me this week and it is pretty cool, especially the vocal recording portion, you can also id by pictures or by describing what you saw. For me it hasn't been wrong yet.

I have this! A Canadian friend suggested it so I have been using it every time I go to a new spot. I love being able to see what kinds of birds are in the areas.

Funny how birds learn from each others and adapt. First the local magpies are getting tamer than any Iv'e seen . They found the suit blocks right by the window and are feeding it to the little ones ones right by the house in an evergreen kinda neat how they latch on like a woodpecker and hang out or upside down and fill up. This morning wife and I saw a woodpecker eating from a hummingbird feeder . He was actually drinking like he has done it before. two first for me , the old saying pecking order comes to mind.

Look up the Wilson Snipe with the "Winnow" sound. Took a while last year to finally get Merlin to recognize it with them being farther off. Something I'm sure I used to hear lots of times and had no idea what it was, I know we have snipes but had no idea that they made that sound.
Identified that European Starling last year with sound and visual, again had no idea what that bird was even though I have seen it plenty of times around the farm. Grackle's can F---- off. I have bee able to trick it for a turkey with a couple different hand calls, yet I can't fool a turkey it seems.

I saw one of these about 10 feet off the road in a slough while in Africa this year, I still regret not making my buddy turn around even with the boat & trailer hooked up so I could get a photo.

Some more south African birds. Im finding birds are like sasquatch...every photo is blurry. Anyone recommend a really fast dslr camera that works well on birds?

Fun fact: 150 starlings were introduced in Central Park by a Shakespeare fan who wanted to see the murmurs in fall. I've seen them in the ass crack of the west Texas desert...

Finally getting a few wild turkeys around the farm , we saw a lone hen in the 60s then these walked through the yard last spring and they are hanging around . I didn't realize they gobble year around, I still hear one once in a while.

anyone have any recommendations for a good "birding" camera? a DSLR with a fast focus and shutter, I'll be in Mozambique and cape town this winter and I don't wanna go on another trip over there with blurry bird photos

I haven't saw a bad picture from you yet MSA , looking at our pictures you know I don't have any advice. almost all our pictures are taken from inside through double pane picture windows in need of a good cleaning on the inside.

just birds for some reason, they never hold still and the photos are always out of focus & blurry. If I take a thousand bird photos, maybe 6 would be worth posting or printing.

You need to prioritize the shutter speed to a very fast setting, vs using auto exposure mode which will always slow down the shutter to provide more light. So then you need a high quality low light lens so that you can use the higher shutter speeds.
