Never done it before have some questions on how and where...

What's the closest western part of sak I can expect to get one? McKenzie bay maybe?

And could a guy just use his paddlefishing pole with a 5oz weight and a crank/spoon maybe??

I think before they come shallow it would be pure dumb luck without downriggers...

The farthest west I have seen people salmon fishing with downriggers is around Indian Hills along the river channel. Without downriggers I would think your best luck would be along the dam or government bay areas after labor day when the salmon move shallower.

Perhaps hanging around launch areas asking different boaters if they wouldn't mind another person in the boat for the day may work. Obviously not in a weird kinda way. Let them know you promise not to wreck their shit but just wanna watch and learn. Ya never know! Some fisherperson may want/need an extra hand in the boat. Some may even enjoy showing a new person the ropes!

Without a brag flag I would think it pretty tough.

I've used heavy weights with 300+ ft of line you will get down there. It takes a bit of the fun out of it as you don't feel the fight as much. Oh and it sucks realing that weight in multiple times.

Furthest west I caught a sewer trout was across from Indian hills. Lots of ways to get your gear down, 8 oz snap weight or a magnum Tadpole can get you there without 300' of line out.

I was hunting suspended walleye above the smelt and it turned out to be chinook.
