I never thought i would see a republican administration take the steps to finally drop mj down to a reasonable schedule instead of schedule 1. Long ways to go in finding out scientifically what mj does and does not do and with that better scientific detection in users system. Then again he is ex democrat, da Goat does it again, now hopefully like making your own hooch people will be able to grow their own purple sticky punch
And this third is 10 years old

Not from what I read.

Can you manufacture substances like ketamine, Tylenol with codeine and anabolic steroids or any other schedule 3 drugs at home?! No, because of its federal scheduling. People not understanding how scheduling affects states legalization and home grows is sad.
This is keeping cannabis as a federally “Controlled substance”. Before with schedule 1 cannabis was out of the reach of big pharma due to schedule 1 drugs having “no medical value”, but now with schedule 3, cannabis now has “medical value”, big pharma can now take over the cannabis industry with the protection of the law.
Federally, every home grow, state licensed grow, state licensed dispensaries are all technically illegal, even more so if you transport it past state lines.
Now, the only group who can “legally”, at the federal level, grow and distribute, nation wide, across all state borders, and even potentially world wide, with no real legal recourse is commercial drug manufacturers and their pharmacies.
This rescheduling just puts cannabis firmly and legally in the hands of commerical drug manufacturers who can now use the courts and govt to help them monopolize the plant and make sure no one else but them gets to grow it.

The scheduling as of right now has never been controlled by the federal government since bush, states have full control as to who can grow not the federal government. We will have to see if north dakota will allow recreational now and allow more dispensaries in the state instead of only 8.
But we have to agree that its in the right direction for better access to mj being that its a schedule 3, brighter future

what does the new law mean to people wanting to buy in illegal states ?

The recent federal reclassification of marijuana, effective April 22, 2026, does not legalize the drug for recreational use and has limited immediate impact for consumers in states where it remains illegal.
Department of Justice (.gov) +3
If you are in an "illegal state" (a state without its own legal medical or recreational framework), the following applies:

Federal Status vs. State Laws
  • Recreational use remains illegal: The new order only moves FDA-approved medications and products regulated by state-issued medical licenses to Schedule III. All other forms, including adult-use/recreational marijuana, remain Schedule I substances under federal law.
  • State laws still apply: Even if the federal government eventually moves all marijuana to Schedule III, it does not override state-level prohibitions. Possession, sale, and purchase in states like Idaho, Kansas, and Nebraska remain subject to local criminal penalties.
    Marijuana Policy Project +5

Specific Restrictions for Buyers
  • Out-of-state purchases: Buying marijuana in a legal state and bringing it back to an illegal state is still a crime. Some states, like Ohio, have recently enacted laws specifically re-criminalizing the transport of cannabis legally purchased elsewhere back across state lines.
  • Hemp-derived products: New federal legislation, such as the 2026 Extensions Act, is tightening restrictions on hemp-derived THC products (like Delta-8). It imposes a strict limit of 0.4 mg total THC per container, which may remove many "legal alternative" products from the market in illegal states starting in late 2026.
  • No "Prescription" access yet: While Schedule III drugs can technically be prescribed, you cannot currently get a federal prescription for standard marijuana flower or edibles to use in an illegal state. Only specific FDA-approved drugs (like Epidiolex) or products within a state-sanctioned medical program are covered by the new rules.
    Rockefeller Institute of Government +5

What to Watch For
  • June 29, 2026 Hearing: The Department of Justice has scheduled a hearing for late June to consider the broader rescheduling of all marijuana, not just medical products.
  • Employment & Housing: Rescheduling may eventually change how employers in illegal states handle drug testing for medical users, but for now, most existing workplace and housing protections do not apply to recreational

Whatever happens in the future what was done on April 22 2026 is a start, there is no doubt mj will be regulated just like alcohol and other forms of drugs like Tylenol or aspirin by controlling how mucb thc can be sold at any local establishment, i believe mj that has a thc level of 5 percent or less will be able to be sold without a prescription. Leaving the higher thc mj for those who get a prescription from a doctor just like codeine or oxytocin. Its a start and it only took nearly a century for it to happen. 1937 was when mj the drug was officially the year it became illegal to possess in the United States while there has been times that it was decriminalizatized and some were allowed to get a federal prescription to use it. Do believe me google it

I agree lunk, I'm still trying to get past the scenario that it's a God given plant that been proven to be a medicine for thousands of years ? Abuse is a horrible thing, I get that, but bad apples in society don't spoil the whole barrel like apples do. We shouldn't even be having this discussion.

And i agree, still be happy davey there is great things coming. We have been talking about mj for over a decade going back to the days on fishing buddy, and it took a president who doesn't drink or do drugs to see the benefits for all Americans.
