With the limited mule deer in ND I think they should not be allowed to be harvested with an over the counter bow tag.

Tell ya what, I’ll have an open spot in my pickup for you in a few weeks. You’re welcome to give badlands archery hunting a try.

1046 mule deer definitely makes a difference. Approximately one in 8 deer taken is muley. Bow hunter took approximately 1/3 of mule deer taken

  • Archery Statistics
    • 28,481 - Archery licenses issued (26,114 resident, 2,367 nonresident)
    • 23,003 - Number of bow hunter license holders that hunted
    • 8,900 - Number of deer taken by bow hunters (7,854 whitetails, 1,046 mule deer)
    • 39% - Bow license holder success rate

What makes more of a difference is selling hundreds of mule deer rifle doe tags again that is brain dead... why in the hell shoot a mule deer for unless the population gets too high which it currently is not

My son and daughter-in-law are giving it a try soon with the bow. Been with him a time or two and he has had success at it.
Next year i will not be working full time and i am not sure if i will put in for a mule deer rifle and this depends on what game and fish will do coming up. But if i can will still put in for muley and if it does not affect my bow, hopefully i can give a weeks try with the bow out west when it is warm outside but not to warm.
Best of luck. db

Not disputing the difficulty just posting the fact that 1046 mule deer were taken by bow hunters.

What makes no sense is allowing an unlimited amount of bow hunters to harvest mule deer which last year was about 1/3 of the mule deer harvested.

i won't disagree with you . I do think the mule deer bow tags should be limited too for certain units especially

been gone a couple days and this blew up into a hell of a lot of pages lol. not gonna read it all. but back to registering deer. Now days it's easy as hell. everyone has a phone capable of pictures. Within 24 hours of downing a deer you send in a full body picture, a picture of the affixed tag that you can read the info on and state what zone it came out of. Three very simple things. Email or text it to G&F. Done. So easy you can train an ape to do it.

no phone guess I would need to find a buddy which I also do not have.

I'm old and change comes hard, just fine the way it is.
I see no need to tell the world of the deer I just shot so 10 thousand can show up to shoot its twin.
It's a family thing and it's a private thing and telling everyone of the deer I shot is just not in my bag of things to do and that includes game and fish.
Never have hung my deer on the hood in the old days and drove up and down main street. Do not intend to do now.

Has nothing to do with illegal but if I shoot a deer with my bow it will not be a little one and it brings attention to my plots and next I got guys driving by my plots.

Got enough junk hanging on me to impress those that feel the need to be impress without showing other things.
Took a chance and me and the son planted four of our plots with mainly winter oats from the Whitetail Inst. along with some wheat and brassicas. Took most of the day. Planting date on bag said until mid September. Planting in earlier August fail. Has not rain in August and went in dry dirt both times. But got 1.5 inches last night so that is good. Maybe August planting will now sprout. Hope for later killing frost as has been the case these last years however the oats should grow in the cold as will the brassicas. db

What biological reason would there be to close the season during the rut.

more deer live specifically mature bucks and make it harder hunting. So in turn more people could go hunting with higher deer numbers

Not where I'd like to be

Also, (I have no actual data for this), but I always wonder how many does go unbred because all the deer get scattered and go into hiding. I'm sure most still find each other and hook up in the dead of night, but I still wonder...

I don't think I mentioned you had to give the location where you shot it. Just the zone. Someones imagination is sure running wild today lol. It's attitudes like this that are part of the problem. And those same attitudes led to the demise of Steinwand's proposal.

I’m just going to say this, when we had record level deer numbers not all that long ago was it because we didn’t hunt the rut? Nope season ran right through the middle of it. Was it our one tag system? Nope people had three buck tags in those years too if they were lucky enough. Was it our deer registration system that was in place? Nope that didn’t exist either. So what was it? Well we had a heck of a lot more habitat than we do now, and make no mistake that was huge, but also Mother Nature gave us weather that was easier on the critters then too. Now we can make any of the changes listed above to make people “feel better” but unless we get back to making habitat somewhat of a priority and get a lot of help from Mother Nature who always gets the final say the higher numbers of deer are just a pipe dream. Remember the game and fish always said those numbers weren’t sustainable to manage forever. Now I’m sure some will think I’m just clinging to my bow tag, nope haven’t chased deer with the stick and string for a few years, or that I am a greedy smokepoler, not that either in fact I’ve never put in for one ever, but in reality I was just always one to enjoy the resources we do have whatever the condition they are in. Now I’m up for doing whatever we have to to protect our resources for future generations but if we don’t change the habitat conditions and don’t get help from the big guy upstairs we will all just have to get used to the numbers the way they are now. Just my .02

This isn't a discussion as to whether or not we need to change the deer licenses or that I want them to change. I'm sure most of you know where I stand on this issue as a bow hunter and I know there are some that feel a change is needed. I'm tickled pink this year having my bow tag, rifle buck tag and now any pronghorn tag - all that is missing is the muzzleloader.

I don't think we need a discussion on this again as to why or why not - just provide an honest answer to the poll. I'm just trying to get an idea where other hunters stand on the issue.

If you think more items need to be added to the poll, let me know.

thanks

ETA - I couldn't add as long of a description as I wanted to in some of them.

For this option - 1 lottery tag that can be used in any season (bow, rifle-unit specific or muzzleloader - statewide)

The number of licenses available for the lottery would be increased by the number of archery tags being issue

...

I just wrote a book and after reading it, it was just a long store that was good for me to write but not to share.
But will leave this portion of my story. I do not bow hunt all over the country. I have a few spots and all around know where they are. They will know where the deer was harvested. I have seen enough of one telling the story and showing what he or she is rightfully proud of only to get negative throw his or her way.
For me the last time was putting their stand within a arrow shot of my stand as I surely most have all the big deer based on what I have shot. (wild imagination, lol really)
I have no desire to share with game and fish either for reason I left out here.

eye, yes I did get carry away and did get off base from what you may be saying.
So if I am all out in left field for what I say let me say it another way.
I could care less what his proposal is. The way it is, is just fine.
I have no desire to take a picture of my deer and sending it to Bismarck even if I knew how. I fail to see what purpose that will serve. And making more new rules when we have enough is where the problem is, not my attitude. db
