why do u consider a larger caliber an upgrade?

243 is just alittle bit on the small size for black bear. That front shoulder blade is thick. She killed a 120lbs bear this year. I think the 100gr bullet is just alittle small if she gets a 300lbs bear in the bait. We are looking for a 338 federal for her just for bear hunting.

SDMF how is the recoil of a 7mm 08 compared to a .243?

I have Kimber Montana's in 243 and 7-08, same rifle, same 6x42 Leupold scopes, same Talley Lightweight ring/base combo. I shoot 85 @ 3200fps from the 243 and 120's @ 3050 from the 7-08. The 7-08 definitely has more recoil but it's less "sharp" than the 243. Neither are particularly harsh even in sub-7# packages. In a 7.5-8# all-up package one would be hard pressed to find someone who COULDN'T shoot a 7-08 well or someone who thought the recoil was punishing.

i loaded her 243 with trailboss they were traveling around 1800 fps for her to get used to shooting. Then for the bear hunt moved up to a hunting load that were about 2900 fps. So I do plan on doing the same with what gun we go with next.

My daughter's got a Tikka T3 in .243 which she really likes. Based on my 7mm-08 which I just started shooting, I doubt the 08 will kick much more than the .243. My 08 is a Ruger however.

If you reload and you can get them to shoot, the 110TTSX barnes bullets in .308 caliber are wicked deer medicine also, out to 300 yards at least.

My wife asked me about her going coyote hunting with me a few years ago. My reply was heck yea, ( I don't have to pack sandwiches no more) she is 5ft tall and get high centered in the snow a lot, well any way we got her a tikka t3 22-250 when she would try to shoot the gun was to big and had hard time with the eye relief on the scope she now has a winchester model 70 feather weight compact in a 243 and the rifle fits her way better.

I got the howa muddy girl for my wife in .308... I picked it because I shoot a 30-06 and trajectory wise they are the same so if we have to swap guns for some reason we can keep similar holds... also shorter action on .308... military cartridge so plenty available... can hunt most big game... was also the only pink camo .308 at the time... plus howa has been making Weatherby actions for a long time... can actually swap a howa to a Weatherby stock

Never read a post: IMHO: Determine her recoil tolerance (I know, vague), then shop and HANDLE all prospects until she looks right in form and comfortable with handling. Adjust from there. Lots of options with aftermarket stocks and original stock mod via shims. weight etc. Women should have equal rights and it's her right to carry a 9 lb 7/08 if necessary. I would say the most important is proper form through proper fit. Keep the scope as low as possible. ensure proper eye relief and ability to work the gun without taking it off the shoulder from field positions. If recoil is EVER unpleasant for her; have plink around with a .22 etc. Don't develop pain/flinch. Also, A LOT of kick is in the ears (offside worse). Plugs AND headphones are a must for the bench.

Just read through the thread and am pleased with myself at repeating a lot of advice. I wanted to see how I'd stack up against those really in the know.

I thought I'd be talking to myself but got a brand new box!. Good deal.

Yep. Bit of blood pounding in my ears. Here I am again; Hello

HI!! I haven't talked to you since yesterday morning when that crude truck kept me in the left lane until I went 90. I'm glad I didn't get zapped by a trooper! I am too!
