Im looking to get a new depth finder before spring. Any recommendations. What I have now is very basic

HaHa KurtR good one. It depends what features you want for example due you want sonar only, sonar/gps, sonar/gps/down imaging, sonar/gps/down imaging/side imaging. I like Humminbirds. You can get the imaging for hundreds less than a Lowrance and you can use I-link with your minnkota trolling motor and use the lake master chip. If you fish Sak a lot like I do the Lake master chip is way better than the Navionics chips. Also not sure if people are still having trouble with Lowrance's transducers going bad after cold winters. 3 years ago we had to switch out 2 transducers because they went bad.

I've used both bird and lowrance. replaced my worthless lowrance a year ago with a new Garmin and there is no comparison. I won't own anything but a Garmin from now on.

I find that my bird is a little more user friendly that the lowrances I have had and used. I have the 859ci hd di and really like it so far.

Would like to stay under $500. Not sure if id need side imaging but would like down scan and gps.

I got an elite 7 i really like. I use an elite 5 for ice fishing that would be a little small if having down imaging on it

do those elites have SI ? If not it comes down to SI or no SI. Lakemaster maps or no lakemaster.
