I personally think pike taste better then walleye but IMO they don’t taste THAT much better that they’re worth the hassle to clean. Still can’t figure out why the G&F has to stick them in every mud hole across the state. Walleye and bass seen like a no brainer. Walleye for table fare and bass for fun.

Really?...I must not be "fish sophisticated" which is fine. I also "hear" DL pike have orange meat (desirable in trout--my grandmother). I see what she was saying comparing Alaska salmon to
Sak salmon. IDK. My fish threshold is "Long John Silver's" and I try to duplicate that "taste".

Grandma was a devout liberal Catholic. We used to bring her bags of wild browns me and Pard caught on Rapalas when I was in on leave. It was a ++; as she only wanted them gutted with the kidney (blood line) removed. We also became "hero's" when she would exclaim in a half Italian/WV accent: "Where did you boys git theese beeg trout?!!😄 (12-19in) Orange meat: Her next few Friday's made her think of me and Greg for a bit.

That is all.
Nothing to do with sophistication but they do have some yellow tint to them 🤷‍♀️
To each their own.

Spend my weekends on Oahe close to the boarder. If you want to head south I may be able to point you in the right direction.

The lake I fish most has large fish of all species - EXCEPT pike! No pike in the lake. LMB, Walleye, crappie, perch, bluegill....that's "it". So nice to not worry about getting bit off!

Thanks everyone for the tips. We fished the Beulah area and kept 17 walleyes between 16-22". Both of the boys caught a big walleye (29" and 27.5") plus we caught around a dozen really nice small mouth. We didn't find a spot with a lot of fish. We just worked the primary point of the bays. we would catch 3-4 in one spot and then move. We sat in 8-12' of water and pitched jigs in. But half of our fish (and biggest fish) came on dead rods behind the boat. There was a 6-7 degree difference in water temp on the south shore vs the north shore. We caught everything on minnows and 3 on plastic and 0 bites on crawlers.

Also, I ended up losing money to the boys on the big fish, most fish and first fish, for which I blame all of you! LOL

Thanks again.

That sounds nearly perfect. Good job getting them on fish!
You might have set the bar pretty high tho. 😉

No kidding! Both boys get catch and release whoppers, not sure how I'm going to top this. What was really cool is that the only time these boys touch their phones yesterday was to take pictures. I asked them if they wanted sandwiches and both said that they were to bust fishing to eat.

I'm going to brag now...The first couple of fish on the dead rods I showed them what to do and how to feed line. They missed the first few fish but each of them fed the line on their whoppers and set the hook themselves. Watching these young men that are 5' tall catching fish with an 8' mid. light rod is a blast to watch. The older I get the more I like watching kids enjoy the outdoors.

I am talking about right out of the water..stinks..hands stink..net stinks...just a stinky slimy snot rocket.
Ever grabbed a cisco? Smell similar to a pike but 4 times stronger

I think if you troll any shoreline on sakakawea varying your depth from 12-22 feet untill you start marking or catching fish. troll at about 1.2mph with bottom bouncers rigged with slowdeath nightcrawler and you should put at least a few walleyes in the well.
