I caught a northern pike last weekend that had a jaw tag in it. I emailed the tag info to NDGF and the response I got back was, "The fish you caught was not tagged by the North Dakota Game and Fish dept. The info you submitted was forwarded to the agency that tagged the fish".

What other agency in ND tags fish? The tag just said: ND PIKE 00718

Since the tag has ND on it i cant see why it would have been tagged in SD

I shot a pheasant years ago in Traill County with a band on it. Similar look to that one or a goose one. I thought that was odd but never looked into it. I'll have to dig it out and see what the imprint is.

Crazy....I remember it was early spring (I think) when I read that the NDGF tagged pike in Ashtabula so that was what I thought it was. I was surprised when I got their response that they didn't tag it.

Doesn't make sense that the fish was caught in Ashtabula, but this article seems to describe your tag. Scroll to pick near bottom of the article for pic of tag.

Article seems to indicate the fish should be at least 39.4" and should have been in Missouri River. Article was a few years old, so may have been another tagging project or projects since, but NDGF should definitely be aware of the tags existence. 🤣

Weird they would not mention the agency that did tag it. Appears they know. Why so vague?

I read the article you posted and its spot on for the size of the fish. She (was already developing eggs inside) was not a pretty girl. I wished I took more pictures because by the looks of it, she was around for awhile. She had battle wounds all over and her tail was worn down to a nub and she still measured 40". I knew she wasnt going to make it because she was deeply hooked with my crankbait that did a lot of damage before i even tried removing it. That is why I thought she was better off in my pickle barrel than washed up on the shore.

If they know why wouldnt they point you to who tagged it?...seems a little off. Did you ask who it was?
