Anybody use one? Are they "sloppy"?

Reason I ask is that the auger/head connection is already sloppy on Strikemasters. If the coupler is also sloppy it would drive me nuts.

I don't use one. Would be interested though, especially up on Winnipeg if a guy needs 2 extensions.

I had a really sloppy lazer mag. Ended up replacing the clutch spring, as it was totally broke. Tightened everything up like new.

Has anybody tried using some kind of hitch pin to attach the flight to powerhead?

This is what I use on the old jiffy.

Davey, I think that is what I am going to try with the SM. I have a digger mount on the ATV, but the auger still takes a beating. For some reason the flight bolts like to strip out, I am constantly tightening them on the powerhead and extensions. This last trip to Winnipeg I had to resort to tightening the bolt and then wrapping it with duct tape so it wouldn't fall out.

Buy longer allen bolts and use plastic locknuts on the threads that stick out.

And make sure Digger carrier is adjusted to properly support the head.

If you are leaving the powerhead on all the time do like Guy said and use a self locking nut for safety reasons. Remember that anything other than flush mount on a rotating shaft could be a grim grabber for a long scarf or a hoodie string .

Misread guys post the first time , That could be a grim grabber too . Duct tape Haha. I am pretty cautious but i watched a guy get wrapped up with a jiffy 30 from his hoodie string . Safety first .

I have lost a couple bolts now from bouncing across a rough lake. I started putting a couple wraps of electrical tape around it with no issues since.

I have used the hitch pins with bail on a Jiffy and for extension on same, catching a hoodie string or such is legitimate concern. on extension I have had bail pop open including throwing pin at times (not yet lost flighting (drill) portion down the hole yet though, but came close) drilling in thick ice due to ice chip build up in hole. I have had it happen with both 'bail opening' pointed in direction of rotation and against, more likely to happen with bail opening pointed in direction of rotation I think. Have to lift auger to clean out chips from hole often while drilling to prevent (and check to see if bail still closed), but one needs to do that anyway when drilling in thick ice, I have seen stuck flightings such as on Winnipeg. Some day I may experiment with cutting a notch in pin for bail when closed to see if that helps.

medium threadlock too

- - - Updated - - -

I put a longer screw and nut on mine, trimmed the screw threads so as to be perfectly flush with nut using a multitool

pretty tough to get a hoodie string to grab on that little flush nut but I guess anything is possible

heck - it's even possible to get a hoodie string wrapping with no nut - in the wind

maybe I should stop ice fishing - seems kinda dangerous now that I ponder it a bit - ha ha

I haven't wore a scarf or a hoodie with strings ice fishing in my life. The relief of knowing I dodged that bullet is immense.

It was a "factory" jiffy 30 with the safety collar in place , No extension . smooth round shaft just reached out and grabbed a hoodie string when the guy was walking with the auger with his finger on the throttle. First hole of the day warming it up while walking to where he was going to start punching holes. Within a second he was wrapped up and wearing the jiffy like a bow tie. Lucky there were a few of us and two other guys had him unwrapped almost as fast as it happened. No pain , No harm but it could get ugly fast with a poorly tuned auger or in a position where you couldn't let go of throttle or worse yet jam it wide open. I bet you could take at a couple good lumps fighting an auger. Ok Safety meeting is over , Be safe.

I wear a hoodie with a string nearly every outing - for 30 years - ha ha (as a liner under the carhart)

seems like pinching that catch/bail wire down (making it a water drop shape rather than a U) - making it harder than heck to open, would work pretty well

Same I still wear my carhartt thermal hoodie that I bought 15 years ago both front pockets are shot but it's warm. I did always wanted to be cool and try ice auger riding but didn't have health insurance.
Davey that's what I used for the jiffy as well .
