I like the tri beam ice ducer on the 28 much better in dialing in on the bottom in 30+ feet of water. Also I like the auto depth digital read out.

I have a 18, hardly ever use it . Prefer the anticipation of waiting for a bite.

I switched from a lowrance X67c to an FL18 last year and wish I would have done it long ago. Super easy to use and understand with good separation. Had the Lowrance for 6years and never really did figure it out completely, just to complicated.

We need Jim Caroll to chime in on here about how flasher technology is dead...:(

As for flashers, I use the FLX-28. Very good unit. I have the FL-8, Fl-20 and had the FL-22. Sold the 22 and upgraded and darn glad I did. I like that LED screen. Auto depth is also awesome. I don't feel that i've wasted my money buying the 28 at all. Seems like its gonna be a great unit. The FL-8 and 20 are reserved for my kids and guests now.

Thanks for the info fellas. I am headed to Bloomington next week to help my folks move. I plan on stopping off at Vexilar to have new brushes put on my 8 and will ask for a demo of their different options.

I have a 28 good system worth the money in my book .

My beef has been with the "jitter" where it seems the auto-bottom lock (or whatever it is called) must be constantly searching/dithering the display just enough to notice.

My Fl-18 is rock solid in both color and position.

I often use the "dithering" in position and color of the flash as an indicator of fish activity just coming in.... so constantly seeing it messes with my head.

As an illustration - the "syndrome" I am speaking of matches what one sees when the puck is swinging slightly.

Does anyone else see that? Maybe I have a bad unit?

Might be a faulty unit
I have not witnessed dithering on my 28. Have ran it two years now and had it side-by-side with an 18. I wouldn't trade the 28 for anything right now. Really really like the digital readout.

no syndrome here used the 28 hard last year good unit guywhojitters. love the fact that vex cant shoot through 3 ft of ice to check depth not many units can do this through late ice.

Sometimes my 18 will show red on the bottom foot or two, like the lake bottom just suddenly came up and is filling in the bottom signal, and hold this way for a minute or so. It isn't fish because it raises my jig up that same distance, and when bouncing the bottom the signal shows me as being 2 feet from the bottom.

I have had this happen a few times a winter and just turn it off for a few and then back on and its normal again.

would this be the dithering you speak of?

I think the 28 has the 18 beat in a few aspects(aside from the obvious extra features). 1. The larger, brighter readout is nicer. 2. It will provide better target separation especially in deep water(I used both at LOW last year and the 18 wasn't nearly as crisp on separating fish from the bottom). 3. Makes less noise.

The one negative I had on mine was it was louder than it should have been and vibrated some. I sent it to Vexilar and they put a new motor in and got the unit back within 5 days. It's not the giant leap like going from an 8 to an 18, but it is an improvement.

Heck - I don't know what it is... the colors and position just dither SLIGHTLY and it drives me nuts.

It's just something for me to crab about.

I agree it's way quieter (thank goodness) and the flat screen not catching/holding snow is awesome.

no - that's an extreme I haven't seen - my dither is really subtle

Guy stop slumming with inferior strikemaster blades and their heavy wobbly flighting.

I had that problem to guy when I had the pro view ice ducer (pro view is garbage IMO), put the tri beam ducer much better when targeting fish on the lake bottom. Now if vex could make a gps enabled unit that would work just fine.
