My daughter loves to ice fish with me and last year really learned to use my 20 year old FL8. This year I plan to get a new Vex for myself and hand the FL8 to her. My question is, which one would you get? I have never used anything other than my 8. I know one of the great things about a Vex is that they are dang near bullet proof. Is that true of the newer units like the 28 that are more digital?

any advice/comments appreciated!

I've had a fl20 for about 5 years and love it, also still have a fl8 that is about 15yrs old. No problems with either unit.

Sawyer,
I'll always have a vex because I can always count on it. I have come pretty attached to my 28.

There was a great deal on a Lowrance Elite 4 HDI that I used last season but If I was in the market this year I would also go with the Helix 5 like some others suggested.

I will probably stuck with vex mostly because there customer service is great. I have an 8 that had never had a problem and a 22 that had a bad trasducer and they had a new one to my house in under a week.

had the same issue. finally broke down and bought an 18 last year took a little getting used to after using my relic of an 8 for so long but once I figured it out I fell in love with it. bottom zoom is the greatest thing ever created. also doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

I have an 18 and 28. Can't tell you I'm overly impressed by the 28. I'll probably sell my 18 and buy the helix 5 and put it on the boat in the summer time. Now, durability and customer support, you will not find a better brand.

The 28 is a good unit. I bought it new last year and love it. Has anyone put an s-140 cable on theirs? Heard it makes it much better in how close they read or detect fish and bottom.

Wags u and SDMF can have a marcum party with your interference selves. Stop slumming and get a refurbished fl-18.

I've got the fl-18 pro pack, not too fancy pants for my simple brain but still enough to do a great job. The tribeam ducer is nice also.
