Im a small family farmer. i haven't got a gov check in years and if you want to point out insurance subsidies look at healthcare- my rates doubled once subsidized. i think small farmers would be better off not subsidized. farmers evil-hunters evil-landowners evil- got it!

how many acres do you run? how many acres do you consider small ?

Don't you think everyone's health insurance doubled ?

Your farm is a business not much different than the construction company I own. Why are many if not most of your purchase to operate TAX EXEMPT while ALL of my purchases to operate are taxed? as a " small family farmer " you do get exemptions

E. Livestock and Poultry Feed: The gross receipts from sales of feed for livestock or poultry and the sales of feed for draft or fur bearing animals are exempt from sales tax. The word “feed” includes generally recognized animal feeds, as well as drugs that are used as part of a feed ration for animal health purposes. Dog food, cat food, bird seed, fish food, and other foods normally sold as pet foods are not livestock feed and are subject to sales tax.

F. Agricultural By-Products for Manufacture or Generation of Steam or Electricity: The gross receipts from sales of agricultural byproducts for use in the manufacture or generation of steam or electricity are exempt from sales tax.

G. Agrichemical Tank Cleaners and Foam Marker: The gross receipts of agrichemical tank cleaners and foam marker when sold to agricultural producers, commercial vegetable producers, or commercial applicators are exempt from sales tax.

H. Fungicides, Herbicides, and Insecticides: The gross receipts from sales of fungicides, seed treatments, inoculants, fumigants, herbicides, insecticides, and chemicals used to protect or preserve agricultural crops that are sold to commercial applicators, agricultural producers, or commercial vegetable producers are exempt from sales tax. This includes adjuvants necessary for the application of these chemicals.

I. Farm Machinery and Irrigation Repair Parts: The gross receipts from sales of new or used farm machinery repair parts and new or used irrigation parts intended for farm machinery or irrigation equipment used exclusively for agricultural purposes are exempt from sales tax. New farm machinery and new irrigation equipment used exclusively for agricultural purposes are subject to the 3% farm machinery gross receipts tax. Used farm machinery and used irrigation equipment used exclusively for agricultural purposes are exempt from the gross receipts tax. I need to buy a farm, anyone have $10,000,000 to get me started with a few acres and some equipment.

Don't kid yourself, you are born into farming, or somehow granted some way in. One doesn't just decide to be a farmer, and it happens.

The suicide rate on the farm is about the highest in any profession too, as even with the tax exemptions, and subsidies, the failure rate is pretty high, and losing a farm that has been generational is a burden most guys cannot carry.

Farmers getting these special incentives is meant to help us all. Try not having a grocery store and the men that sell the product to keep the shelves full. 95% of Americans would starve this day and age without it.

As with any government subsidy, it will sometimes give advantages to some, and look bullshittery, but that is life.

Plenty of friends in the industry, they have nice properties, second and third homes, and seem to work 6 months of the year. I am envious, but happy for them. I have friends in the industry that work 365, never buy new, never vacation, and barely make the operating loan payments. I am glad for my non farm life then.

Its with any occupation, but agree, no one subsidizes my 30+ years of being a salesman, some years I earn way more, some years a subsidy would be neat.

Relationships crumble, kids take over the land, people sell it….ect. It happens all the time and access can be gonzo in a split second! I’ve seen it happen more than once. You absolutely can not expect access to be there from year to year.

The ONLY way to guarantee your OWN hunting land is to buy it.
You are correct ever go to auction or place when they have big sale, hell my check book is not that big good god been trying for 30 years. Good ole friend farms north Dunn Center in heart of Bakken his family is loaded with all the oil wells. Was with him and his brother on land auction sale they brought brief case full of money and put it on table when auction started was crazy.

Your not the only person I have heard this from. Reminds me I need to go grab a lotto ticket (Think I have bought 5 total in like 20yrs), there is land coming up for sale near me and I can't touch it without striking it big. Unfortunately I wouldn't be able to get everything settled probably before auction time.

Believe it or not, being in the business I am. There are a lot of farmers who back in the 60's-70's couldn't pay their note at the bank, and signed minerals over to the lender to cover some money owed, thinking those minerals were unattainable making them worthless at the time.

Lots and lots of lenders in this area that make WTFM on their minerals than they do lending money

I have been blessed with a large amount of land to cover and hunt. I have been hunting the same area for many years and got know the landowners, which lead to permission to hunt. Some in the area are dicks, but oh well. Also a guy in the are that owns A LOT of land. I went out on a limb last year and decided to call him to hunt a specific quarter of land. He told me he had his gratis tag so call him back after the first week. I called a few times but he never answered; oh well, his land. The thing that bugs me the most though is the people that have their land in PLOTS and either have their cattle in there the whole hunting season or it is mulched down to nothing.

This topic -- i remember this on FBO it was quarterly if not monthly

Prices though crop go down and land goes up in price. Doesnt make any sense to me. We printed to much money --- interest rates were to low. I have bitched about interest rates forever.

Plots = 836k acres in ND. That is 836k acres more then what was open when i first started hunting. The good areas were always posted to back in the 70s and the crop prices spiked back then too. Age old problem finding land to hunt on. You have to put your time in to find some.

So when I spend all kinds of time and money creating habitat and miraculously I have deer and pheasants, I’m supposed to let every swinging dick on to hunt? Then guess what. No more deer and pheasants. It’s always roses looking from the outside in.

Devils advocate hypothetical scenario based on land owners issues with herds destruction of property in other states like Wyoming. What happens when deer become over population becoming a nuisance to property can land owners still claim loss of income if public can not thin the herds. We are already seeing it in other states where deer populations are becoming a public nuisance, what then do we need to cull herds because of loss of income, or disease who is in charge of clean up who pays for the clean up

the point I am trying to make is that it is because of the tax payers help through tax exemptions and subsidies you are where you are today. if you disagree then pay back all the subsidies you received and pay the sales tax on everything you bought the was tax exempt And then you can truly say you are at where you are at today on your own.
