I wouldn't diss the CC method as it's very useful in Alg II when multiplying polynomials. Plus It's useful using the distributive property in Pre Algebra. Also lower level math students like the method better as shown, and why not teach BOTH? Oh and it works good for mental math for higher level students.

I prefer old school methods but as rowdie explained its far from retarded. Education shouldn't be partisan politics. The department Ed may need a good push back towards the middle but to eliminate it so states can embrace blue or red brainwashing doesn't seem helpful
