Just curious how much of an ass kicking people got from last night's storm. I'm hearing reports of tennis ball sized hail in places. Ouch!

We had small hail, but nothing like last week. Figure it will be nice until I get my roof and siding fixed. This is NE Bismarck.

I drove through a hail storm coming back from devils lake on memorial day. Wasnt very big, but it came down like a sob. The cleanest my pickup has been in years. Someone needs to patent this carwash idea

So in last weeks storm hail damaged two out of the four sides on my house's siding, adjusters coming out this week, will they replace all four sides? how do they go about this? any tips before meeting with adjuster, never had a claim before, how much does insurance usually go up after a claim? dont mean to hijack, just am curious

A. lot depends on your insurance company and adjustor. The repair replace will depend on the amount of damage and age of the siding. Best thing going is to find a good contractor that will negotiate and make sure you get a fair deal.

Talking to my neighbor yesterday there are allready a few fly by night contractors going door to door in Bismarck. Anyone worth there weight won't be able to answer the phone right now let alone go door to door.

scrot, If your siding is damaged, your roof is also likely to be replaced. Asphalt shingles look fine until you get up close and see the cracks from the larger hail stones.

Technically, the insurance is only on the hook to replace the two damaged sides. Hopefully, you will be able to still get the same siding you already have on the place. If that is not available, the insurance company may replace all 4 sides, but that's a call that is individual to each insurance company. Only the adjuster and your agent will be able to answer those questions. Last time I had hail damage it was limited to two sides, and not even all of the pieces were damaged. I ended up replacing them myself by buying enough new to do half of one side, then cannibalizing the good pieces left over to color match in the damaged areas of one side so I didn't have a checker board look. Took a little extra work on my end but was worth it.

Matching the color is the kicker. If they can't find a color match, you have an argument for all for sides. Also, like was said before, if your siding is damages chances are so is the roof. Siding took a glancing blow and broke. The shingles took direct hits. Go up and take a look. Leaky roofs are about as high on the "Suckness Scale" as broken septic systems. Hope it all works out!!

Situation like this is tuff when singled to one general area, the 1st thing that happens is they run out of building material, when this happens contractor's most often can only give you a 30day window for supplies as demands will jack up material costs, went thru this a few years ago, next your ins company sends a check to your mortgage company and they write checks as work is completed in sections,my company farmers sent inspectors out when each job was completed, siding, windows, roof etc,it was a pain.

Your storm in nodak dropped 4" diameter hail while we were fishing the Aitkin area near mille lacs, the hail looked like grapefruit in size.

Vinyl siding is the most common type of siding to have hail damage. That isn't necessarily a bad thing as it's pretty obvious that it is damaged. There are visible holes, kind of hard to miss. The same is true for shingles. May look ok from ground, go up and you will see the damage. Most insurance companies are good about covering the damage. Especially in a town or city, it's pretty obvious that a storm went through when most of the houses in a neighborhood have damage. The down side in a city the size of Bismarck is that there is a lot of work for a limited number of contractors. Do be careful of fly/by/night contractors. Once the work is done and they are gone it's hard to find them to correct any repairs. That does not mean that contractors who come in to do storm repair are all bad, just be careful. Check for licensing, bonding, etc.

I don't suggest with vinyl siding that you accept partial replacement. It is true that vinyl siding is really pretty easy to take off a single piece and replace. Fading will be the issue. If the siding is pretty new (like a year or less old) that might be possible but check a new piece versus the old prior to thinking replacing a piece hear and there is a good idea. Hopefully the color you have is still in stock.

Storm repair is a pain to deal with but be thankful you still have a house to repair and all you had was a hail storm instead of a tornado. Don't get to upset if you think the price quoted is higher than expected. There will be lots of work and limited numbers of workers. Most will charge a premium price. That's the way it is whenever there is a shortage. Remember what happened to housing costs out west when lots of people needed a place to live and there were limited numbers of beds. Happens that way with storm damage and repair. Nearly everyone goes by the motto "You need to make hay while the sun shines." Same thing happens when the word gets out that the fish are biting in some spot or lake.

Yup, except I recently found out ND is a non match state. Doesn't matter how faded or if your color is still available insurance only has to cover the damaged sides. Some may do the whole house in certain situations, but they aren't required to.

We didn't get the last round of storms too bad. Light hail but nothing like last friday early am. We lost multiple windows, roof on both house and garage will more than likely be replaced (tin), and the tin barn for the horses got hammered (Menards tin and yes the hail went completely through a few places). Biggest hail was just under 3 inch diameter at the house.

After checking Ericb's info from what I found he is correct. Matching is not necessarily covered for all houses. However the insurance people I visited with lean very heavily to at least covering a whole side to match but not necessarily the whole house. I guess it would depend on how much has faded whether it would be real obvious. I'm guessing darker colors would fade worse than a lighter color. Don't know the particulars but one agent told me you can carry an add-on to cover matching the whole house. Have no idea of the cost. I guess it goes back to reading your policy and making sure it covers everything you think it does.
