What does everyone think about the new tiny house craze? Watching HGTV tonight and watching these folks look for tiny houses was interesting. Living in a "house" that is 100-250 sq. ft. is interesting. The concept is interesting to me but not realistic in many ways as well.

I have designed hundreds of homes and done even more remodel design jobs. It's difficult to get someone what they want in a house with 1400 sq. ft. on the main level. These people are planning to live on 10% of that. No debt is great but having a "home" is important to me too. And the thought of "moving" some of these homes is hilarious too, a big diesel truck would be all that would move them. I really wonder why they don't just buy a camper if they want to move it around at all. $15,000 gets you plenty of camper that is actually designed to be pulled.

Don't get me wrong, I love having a smaller footprint and using green materials. I simple, small contemporary design using SIPS and solar would be an ideal house for me (plus a three car garage LOL). But, I just can't wrap my head around living in 150 sq. ft. Curious if I'm the only one.

I have lived in my camper for a couple weeks at a time with 2 kids, tiny house isn't for me. My camper is 280 sq feet, I can't imagine living that close with no privacy for any longer then a couple weeks. I'm in construction and just don't see the benefits.

I find this concept amazing. It wont last long as I think it is just a fad. Do these people realize that 100 sq/ft is a 10 x 10 box. You may as well shoot me if I had to live in that. My deer stands are 8 x 8 for crying out loud!

for bernie voters, and others under 21, it would b great... if you can't fit all your cloths in a 2x1x4' dresser, have more than 3 pairs of shoes, or have more than 3 jackets/coats, grow up...

I believe most of those homes are being built for the homeless.

There was a time where I dreamt of living in a shack on a mountainside in Idaho not much bigger than that. Now? Well....

Reminds me of the old adage that if you like free meals, government housing, and never making a decision for yourself, just go to prison. Seems custom designed to acclimate people to being wards of the state, learn to accept life in confinement with no personal possessions. We'll accept anything if it's trendy. Like Obama...

The novelty will wear off and the realization of their stupidity will occur right after the arrival of the first round of wet farts or Hershey squirts. There IS NO ESCAPE in a 10 X 15 house.

My wife watches that show. I catch her screaming at the tv often...usually when the potential buyer is checking out the tiny house and they say something like, "the dishwasher is a little small". Or the couples with kids that are all gonna live in it so they can pursue their career as a artist (be unemployed ). I think it is also a fad, people will get sick of them pretty fast I'd think. On the other hand if your retired and single or trying to live cheap maybe it's not a bad idea. Not everybody needs or wants 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.

wife was watching it and googled the people on the show, lasted 3 weeks before they moved out, probably ended up with a vacation cabin cheap built by the show.

Jeff Foxworthy was spoofing tornadoes in Tennessee wreaking havoc. He couldn't understand why people didn't simply hook their pick-up to their house and pull it out of the way.

I grew up in a small house. It was build inside a lumber yard during winter.

Just watched an episode. A $30,000 trailer home would blow their f$&@#%! minds. I don't live in a really big home, not a lot of space between me and the neighbors. With that said, my deck is bigger than most "tiny houses". If I add a canopy and shitter, we could lease it as a rental space.

I'm amazed at how many tiny houses I've been seeing people have built for their kids. About the size of a small garden shed with windows and a porch and steel siding. Unreal how much the price tag has to be for a playhouse not much bigger than the cardboard box an appliance would come in. We used to nail a few boards in the Y of a tree and have all the house we needed.

Never watch any of the "reality" tv shows, but I really thought it was about houses for "little people." It's like all reality tv shows - made for tv viewing … no relationship to the real world.
