This thread made my day! Duckslayer is quite an artist to do that so quickly. I got busy at work so couldn't check back but had many laughs reading this thread!!!

I think it looks like the USPS bird along with a little of the old MN Northstars logo.

I saw that too.
My opinion is that it's time to move on. Sioux is not coming back. If you are one that keeps saying Sioux forever and booing whenever "Fighting Hawks" is said, you are just hindering the process. Maybe this new logo isn't everything we all hoped it would be, but it is what we have. Remember we could have been looking at a new logo for your "Sun Dogs".

You can blame the folks who can't let go all you want, but if UND really wanted to put it to bed they'd let the trademark expire and quit selling Fighting Sioux gear. I mean sure, another company probably would snatch it up to produce gear, but at least it wouldn't be available at the Ralph. You'd have to order it. Sales would be steady for awhile, but if what you and others are saying is true, they'd wane in time as the new Logo/Nickname gained a following.

I just don't believe UND or anyone else actually believes that strong enough, otherwise their actions would follow suit. They don't want to give up control of the Fighting Sioux trademark, nor do they want to lose dollars associated with the sale of Fighting Sioux merchandise.

Here's the big issue. Yes, a lot of people wouldn't ever like any logo no matter what. BUT, I think the majority would've been a lot more willing to accept the logo if these things would've happened:
1. Don't pay a company from out east 50 grand to come up with something so bland. Huge waste of money while cutting other good programs.
2. Allow a local company, artist, or person to come up with the logo. Make it a contest.
3. Let the general public vote on it (or the same people who got to vote on the name).
4. Have a logo that would've had way more detail and much less basic, something people could've worn with pride because it looks cool.

They took a sensitive subject and made it even worse. It's been a huge fail from front to back, not because of the name, because of the process. Personally, I'll continue to support UND hockey, but I don't think I'll be buying any merchandise.

I think you are half right. It's all about the mighty dollar. I think UND completely understands that the name is not coming back. But as long as there is such a HUGE following of people who treat a dang college nickname and logo with more fierce loyalty than they do their own family, God or Country, then UND will do anything in their power to keep selling it. Why wouldn't they? Econ 101. There are more important things in life than what is on the front of UND's jerseys.

I completely agree. I think there were a lot of people ready to get behind a new awesome logo and move on, but this is not the logo to do that with.

So.... they purposefully chose a milktoast mamby pamby testosterone-free logo on purpose - so as not to interfere with brisk sales of the old high-T design?

genius!

I don't think that was the intent, but it certainly doesn't hurt sales of the old design.

Obviously it was going to be difficult to top the Sioux logo, but dam that's one lame azz logo. With a gay logo like that team should be named the Fighting Cawks.

Hawks every where are pissed and having a sit in. That logo is so disrespectful to the hawk community the outrage is hard to contain.

A missed opportunity: Designer of iconic Sioux head sounds off on new UND logo

BELCOURT, ND (WDAZ-TV) - Many have been calling for input from the designer of the former Fighting Sioux logo.

He tells WDAZ that he DID have an input in the process, but the school didn't listen.

Tucked off a dirt road, on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation, there's a metal shack. There, the artist who created the iconic Sioux head lives.
Back in 1999 Bennet Brien was asked by the University to draw up 5 sketches for the Fighting Sioux, but it only took one loaded with symbolism.
Bennet Brien: “The determined look which you have to have in life and going to college.”
He was paid $2,000, and when he heard of the new nickname he immediately got to work creating a Fighting Hawk using some elements of the old logo.
Brien lives and works just north of Belcourt, when he got a call to come to Grand Forks to make the three hour trip to give his input on a new Fighting Hawks logo.
Brien: “I went to this meeting and they had this New York guy and a big screen or whatever, from New York. And they showed a bunch of different logos, man you know, and there was one I liked so I told the guy I like that one, kind of.
He says the trip was a waste of time.
Brien: “I said, you got to use, I like that one. But, if you incorporate more the colors from the Fighting Sioux logo, somehow, and try to give it that kind of look and then I'd probably go with it you know. But, they didn't they totally didn't even go with what I suggested.”
The university had a different vision.
Ed Schafer, interim UND president: “I felt it was important to have professional logo development people and branding people develop that and not just a local artist.”
And at the end of the day, interim president Ed Schafer made the call.
Schafer: “I already had my favorite.”
Brien is disappointed with the logo and thinks UND missed an opportunity to add to the story of the Fighting Sioux.
Brien: “There's Indian legends that people turn into animals and stuff. There's always these things going on to explain different things you know. That would've been a good one. This guy turning into a hawk, that'd have been cool. That'd have been alright man, I think people would've dug it.”
With or without one legendary artist’s input, the page is turned to the future of the Fighting Hawks.
More than 1,000 people have voted on an online poll conducted by our partners at the Grand Forks Herald. 70% are against the new logo.
