How did you guys pull that off and how does it work ?
A combination of ND Parks and Rec as well as ND G&F could definitely do it after jumping through whatever Fed loopholes that needed done. Parks has several state parks w/camping and water access. G&F manages lots of ramps and cleaning stations.

I'd be up for that , G&F does a good job on the fishing end of the department and could probably buy the National fish hatcheries for a dollar since they are non essential to the feds.

JTAK was its name. It was a bill or Federal act back in the 2000s. The CORP gave back all the land above the high water mark on Oahe to tribes and state. I thought it was in ND too. I know Standing Rock also got a big check. How they dispersed it was a little crazy. Long story short the CORP campgrounds went back to state or tribe. Now you have to pay to enter the campgrounds as they are state parks.

ND is generally not interested in taking over USACE parks, or expanding its current system of parks.

Only Lake Sakakawea State Park has a history of being "profitable". All the rest are money sinks. Which means you would have to convince the legislature to appropriate more money to own and operate another park. Remember the fight over Cross Ranch? That took years to get approved through the legislature even with the land being donated by the Nature Conservancy.

This seems like it would be a better use of our OHF dollars than it would currently going to a guiding operation to remodel their lodge by Medina

Simply put, the state parks in ND are generally pretty quiet during the week and are really only busy during good weather weekends. I worked at one for a couple years after I got out of the Corps, and expenses remain pretty constant regardless of how busy the park is as a golden rule.

Can't say I disagree with this, but I'm not in charge of either the OHF or ND Parks and Rec.

One just has to remember, that parks in general are provided as a service to the public and services cost money.

I think Grahams Island is as well.

That's possible as my info on the topic is somewhat dated at this point. Grahams Island is certainly one of the more steadily busy parks, but I'd suggest it has taken a significantly higher amount of O&M through the years just to stay open.

It’s my understanding they are putting a few more cabins in up at grahams. Wish they’d do the same at pick city. I think most NDans could get on board with using OHF funds for these sort of projects or to supplement funding to our state parks or wmas. I can’t imagine many support some of the special interest and pet project spending they are proposing now. How in the actual fuck does a guide service get tax money in the first place? How does that even help the general public…..? Oh that’s right it doesnt.

Maybe in general they need to start thinking about it

That “upscale hunting experience” project grant in Medina pisses me off. Makes the Jamestown buffalo world park seem like a good idea.
