IMO, one of the biggest problems with this system is US, THE SPORTSMEN!!!! It's not about hunting elk and the whole experience of chasing these majestic creatures, it's all about shooting that BIG BULL!!! I applied one time for a cow elk tag in ND, and I was SUCCESSFUL the first year I applied. So I don't buy into this "I'm never going to get a ND elk tag in my lifetime, so something needs to be changed" garbage. If you want to hunt elk in ND, it's NOT that hard to get a cow tag. However, if a cow isn't good enough for you and you "CHOOSE" to go for a bull tag, that's your choice so deal with the realities. Furthermore, putting 500 bucks in a coffee can each year you are denied a tag would soon provide you with enough cash to go on a pretty good elk hunt in MT, CO, or Wyoming. My DIY elk hunt in MT cost about 2500 bucks door to door for 10 days. The system is fine just the way it is. Bash Away Boys!!!

I'm in agreement with you......have now drawn both elk and moose cows.

I accessed some private ground from two different land owners.

did you have to pay trespass fees? had a buddy draw a cow and did get access on private ground. one was " pay before you enter regardless if you kill one" one was " pay x amount for cow and x amount for a bull which was substantially higher if you harvest one. ".

I always apply for the E1 elk as I grew up that way and went to high school with a few kids that have taken over the family farms. it seems one of them shoots a solid bull every other year. I often wonder how they keep getting tags but don't say much as I know they would let my family on if we ever were lucky enough to draw one.

right, wrong idk but I would rather have them on my side than against me if I drew.

Putting in for cow is damn near a 100% draw rate most years. But I can and have shot many cows in other states so will not waste my time putting in for a cow tag i don't want. Our bulls are to big to be ignored.

There are big bulls out there and the reason in ND folks don't know how to hunt elk. I think many follow their natural instinct of road hunting once they get that tag.

agreed, had a couple guys from here apply and get both their cow tags same year father son duo and i dont think they ever saw an elk, didnt go in advance to get landowner permission i would bet they hardly got out of the pick up... might work to snag a whitetail here and there good luck using that to get you an elk...

Well it must work to some extent. Our elk success rates are stupid high but I'm not sure how. When me and buddy drew in the same year, we only saw one other bow hunter.

My second cousin shot a 345" 5x6 from the road when he had a tag. That's obviously not the norm but it can happen. I think it was mid day and the bull crossed the road in front of him. Jumped out and shot him 100 yards from the pickup. Ha

I would have just walked away the moment he started chewing. I have no obligation to listen to him. If he wants to chew ass, he has to pay me for my time.

Hahah pay you for your time. Get the hip boots out we are getting meeloshed again!

I also have zero desire to kill does or cows. #boring
