The current trend I'm seeing in this part of the state is..most of my friends head to Deadwood. I think thats why placing one at Medora would keep our 'residents' in the western part of the state and spending money in our own state owned casino instead of watching them cross the border. Deadwood is the NEW prairie knights around here per say. I myself would go to Deadwood over PKC. Been trying to plan a trip but it hasn't worked out yet....lol

I don't think the state should own any business at all if they want casinos let someone build them at least then if they start loosing money the tax payers are not footing the bill. This legislature is really weird and do some stupid stuff it seems like.

Can anyone open a casino right now the way the laws are? I didn't think they could that's why they are only on reservations so if that's the case why should the state be allowed to open one when nobody else can

No and yes. I guess there would be ways a person could open a "casino" just not with all the games. Plus a person couldn't take the money from it they would need to be an employee of an approved charity. So essentially what's the point if you can't make any money for yourself? There probably is also limits on those things as well I don't know all the rules about that. Places like WFV and American Legion pretty much don't exist is most places in ND if they aren't allowed to run gambling especially in towns with less than 5000 people. No way can they do any charity work selling beers.

I'm just not a casino guy and think casinos change the whole dynamic of a town once they are in it. Having said that, if there is one place i could see one it would be Medora, but I'm not sure Medora would want it.

I am not much of a gambler, I will dump $ 20 in a penny machine if we stop to eat but have never played Black jack, craps or bingo at a casino. I'm more intrigued with the cash flow, Oil tax will continue but in 5 years it would be nice to have a gold mine. There was a straight forward article in Forbs magazine yesterday.

Yep it's crazy. Watford raised theirs as well. Gave the voters a "choice" either vote for an increase in the existing city sales tax or loose the entire city sales tax and "lose everything the city does". No option to keep the existing one. That being said at least there is a choice there instead of just taking money from people for owning their own house. Sales tax is the "fairest" tax yet everyone can't help believe the city state and counties when they say they NEED all of them.

I don't think Al Carlson is comfortable unless he is in a headline somewhere.
I wouldn't care about sales tax if we had no property tax. I'd rather pay 12% sales tax and no property tax.

Yep. Me too. Williston has been a prime example of government saying it needs 6x the amount of money for 3x the amount of people.

They would be able to do it because the people of north dakota gave them the green light to open them.

Why not just let someone come into this state and build than instead of the state. And I never gave anyone the green light for a casino and it's a new topic that most people in the state have never thought about as far as the state owning one

Nd is one of the only states I know of that doesnt sell scratcher tickets. Ive always believed this was do to the state not wanting to contribute to ones vice. Even though it could have made millions for our schools.

Now some natives piss us off and its go time. Lets profit off of gambling, Alcohol hell by the time the first one is built they might have to throw in a state run recreational MJ dispensary.

For the record when on vacation I enjoy a little gambling from time to time. I realy have no issue with the state owning a casino. When I moved here you couldnt buy beer on Sundays most no businesses were open on Sundays. Youd always hear everyones morel reason why it needed to be that way. We refuse to let corperations own Farms or Pharmacies. Kind of sounds a little Jaded to me.

Nope. States have no business owning anything. Make it legal, control the number of permits and collect taxes, but stay out of something that should be private business.

That's what this is all about. It's not like if they pass this that casinos will become legal the next day....it would then go to a ballot measure in 2018 to be voted on by the people. Funny thing about all this is its not like it's a new thing, people have been advocating for this for years.

Don't forget the tribes can and probably would build one at United tribes. Hell they have talked about it for some time now. Hotel casino at the airport talk about a license to print money although I'm guessing it will have to be split between the different tribes.

we have a state owned mill and bank so I see no problem with a state owned casino. I'm ordinarily not for this kind of thing because governments usually can't manage this kind of stuff. But they seem to be doing just fine with those two.

This is out of my know how and I have a question, If JP Morgan owned the bank in Bismarck and Cargill owned the mill In Grand forks would that be better or worse for ND residents ?
