A re state-owed casino's a possibility in North Dakota? Some lawmakers are saying the proposal is in retaliation, and risks angering American Indian tribes even more when relations have already been rubbed raw by the Dakota Access pipeline dispute.
Republican Majority Leader Al Carlson says his idea is not "anti-American Indian."
He says it would establish casinos as "destination-oriented attractions" and use profits from them to offset state taxes.
Many lawmakers believe the measure has little chance of passing, but they fear it's further damaged the state's relationship with its tribes.
Carlson's resolution is a proposed constitutional amendment that would go to voters if lawmakers give the OK.
It does not need the governor's approval, but Governor Doug Burgum says he opposes the idea.

This is out of my know how and I have a question, If JP Morgan owned the bank in Bismarck and Cargill owned the mill In Grand forks would that be better or worse for ND residents ?

Hard to say. Considering there are private owners of mills in ND that haven't seem to affected out state owned mill I'm not sure what the difference would be. I think the state owned bank is better for North Dakotans than a JP Morgan bank for various reasons. They provide student loans and home loans to North Dakotans that JP probably wouldn't provide. I really don't know.

This is spite.

I'm not sure the only motivation for this is spite, but I'm ok with that being a part of it. As far as I'm concerned, the tribe had the whole first half of the session to come to Bismarck with a $30 million dollar check and a sincere apology for the titty sprinkling mess they brought to the state. If they had, this bill may not have been introduced. As others had said, they can now sleep in the bed they made.

The most ironic piece of this whole thing may be that the average resident of Standing Rock will likely see more benefits from the revenues of a state run casino, than they ever have from the tribally owned casinos.

If anyone should be paying the entire cleanup bill it should be the COE and the DOJ for blatantly allowing the law to be broken. I'm not going to punish locals because they happen to be Native even though the overwhelming feeling at Standing Rock was they didn't want people there in the first place. If we call for punishment of Standing Rock we have been duped as much as anyone by the companies and the W. Buffets paying these assholes to roam around and cause trouble. Good thing Archambault made enough to retire a couple times over because he is getting the boot when his term is up, not soon enough imo.

Ill agree with this, plenty of blame to go around. Very bad leadership decisions by the tribe, but also many outsiders causing problems.
We all know the tribe has no money to give and wont anytime in the near future.

The feds dropped the ball many times over on this one. Seeing all the clean up pictures for the last few weeks it is crazy the amount of junk, supplies, structures, buildings that were put up there with zero push back from the CORP. Laws are laws.

Its crazy how fast they moved to end 20 white guys protests on federal land in Oregon, however they let 5-10k people set up shop and build a landfill for 6 months.

I agree that there is plenty of blame to go around and the COE should share in the cost as well, especially the clean up cost. However, the casino itself lent all sorts of support to the protestors via shelter, showers, food etc. And this was all done at the expense of their long-time, loyal customers who have supported that place for years. I know more than a few regular patrons who did not even feel safe setting foot in there any more,in addition to the inconvenience of not being able to take the most direct route down there. If their business does not recover, or is replaced by a state run casino they have no one but themselves to blame.

Doubt they would put one down there since there is no advantage to doing that. They would be better off keeping it near bismarck as well as I-94 and highway 83. No need to go down there to capture business that you will still grab at only a couple miles out of town.

Actually, when you think about it from a numbers perspective, this would arm the State with 5 casinos to compete with the tribal casinos, and one to put in yet another location. In that sense, Medora would have to be pretty damn high on the list.

Personally, I like to throw a little coin at the charitable gaming sites that are already in existence at the local watering holes. I doubt this would make me want to go put nickels in a slot at Medora, or anywhere else. I go to the 4 Bears casino a couple times a year when I am back home, and that is great plenty for me.

A huge and unequivocal No!! This has the "Smell" of a new state tax for us. Sales or vice or whatever. I would rather my tax dollars at the current tax rates go toward education, land/water access improvements, roadway maintenance, or any number of public service outlets that benefit all North Dakotans rather than to construct, maintain, and staff an industry that has NO societal benefits whatsoever. Novelty wears off......taxes seem to last FOREVER!!!!
