I wonder if the public would go for no property tax on any property that doesn't earn you income. So if you rent out your basement, or own an apartment building, you would have to still pay tax, farmland, pastures, shops, businesses run out of homes, strip malls, etc. would all still pay property tax. Only primary residence not used for income would be abolished. Hopefully that would set some of the elderly or people on fixed income up with a better retirement, maybe even a term of property tax payment after 10 -15 years of living in a primary residence you would be done paying property tax.

I look at how much my SS has went up according to COL. So if you are on a fixed income your property tax's are killing you. Some day I will have to sell my home because I can't afford the taxes.
Happened in Williston a lot. Old people that had little old houses valued at like 30k living strictly on SS. Taxes were a couple hundred bucks. Oil boom came and now those homes are valued at 250k. And that’s no exaggeration. Now their taxes are $2200+. They were forced to sell and move to a small town somewhere. Sure they got good money for their homes but they had to leave the only community they’ve ever known and their families. I worked with an old guy that was in late 70’s when boom hit. He had a decent amount stuck away to retire and was going to. He lived alone in a $250 a month apartment. Bam in six months his rent was 2k a month. He couldn’t afford to retire and continued to work until late 80’s when they found him dead in his apartment. This shit is inexcusable.

I don't think that will ever happen as the interest expense on the federal debt would sky rocket too.

Remember back in the early 80's when you could get CD's with interest rates in the upper teens?

Yes I do, hell I had money markets in 2004-2007 that were getting 7-8%, it was beautiful.

If this doesn't pass this time around we need our heads examined, the only thing dumber would be to not pass term limits if it ever came to a vote.

theres a program in place to help them with this situation but nobody knows about it. And those that do won’t do it because it’s a handout. They grew up in an era they don’t take handouts. They loose their dignity

Are the oil producing counties ok with ending property tax if it means replacing it from oil revenue? Especially if that means non producing counties would essentially be taking even more of something they didn’t produce than they already do?

1. IMO there shouldn't be 1 nickel that leaves "oil country" until their infrastructure needs are met.

2. To be fair, "oil country" lived off of sales tax reciepts from the eastern 2/3 of the state from the last oil bust in the 80's until the boom started in the last 2000's. The state of ND collects a 5% sales tax, anything above that is going directly to counties or municipalities.

They don’t get shit anyway. Nothing of nothing is still nothing. Williston has the largest sales tax collection in the state and see essentially nothing from that either. City of Williston is 280 million in debt because they believe the legislative leaders when they told them to go ahead and do all that infrastructure work because we will be getting you the money. Then they end up sending 1/4 of what they promised.

Why is no one questioning this? Where are the "conservative" commentators who drone on and on about having too much government and try to tell us this is a Conservative state? Can we please try to question people running for office this fall? All this money and our local sales taxes and property taxes still keep climbing. Is all this money benefiting the average citizen?

There are only a few things they’re conservative on. Hoarding away money by the billions. Not coughing money up for things it’s needed for. If your going to take it use it or don’t take it. You obviously don’t need it. So we are obviously grossly overtaxed. They’re conservative in some of their ideology ex: Sunday closings. Which thankfully are gone. Those types of things.

The answer is No. Benefits go to those in a "special" class. We have made so many special classes and you are a bigot if you don't think (pick a class) should get special benefits. Here are some: LBGTABC, non-white, old, poor, really poor, single parent, special needs, ADHD, OCD, addicted, in recovery, vets, farmers, aliens, refugees, disabled, seasonal worker, unemployed, homeless, and on and on and on.

Take a look at the ND long tax form and how many different tax credits there are. How many "patronage" jobs are out there for people with political connections? We have too many counties and too many colleges. We have school districts that need to be merged.

A lot of politicians and there friends are getting rich off the hard working people of ND these days. Sad. All we can do is sit back and watch. Voting certainly doesn’t seem to make a bit of difference.

This is what happens when one party is in complete control and not even challenged.
