Im not a sd gfp bobo but they have done a damn good job managing the deer. They cut back tags when needed while keeping the opportunity pretty high. They also give people the option of shooting a buck or a doe when you draw the any deer or any white tail tag which will let some little deer get big. I know we went for double tags both east and west river to single tags and i didnt draw my any deer west river with a point and have to settle for whitetail. If i could i would give that tag back as i will get to hunt white tail east river and i really wanted to hunt muleys.

Overall SD G&F does one hell of a job. Last year for example once there was confirmed EHD, they made big efforts in giving refunds for certain counties to immediately react to what was happening.

Or is it a case of "grass is always greener?"

Could be, I lived in ND my whole life until 3 years ago. Overall getting tags is much better, better run lotteries, etc. The worst part is the land laws, everything is considered posted . . . sucks a lot after living in ND so long. If that issue comes up, don't let ND change that for sure!

You had a 15% chance of drawing that muzzy tag and you seem surprised you didn't get drawn? FYI, next year you only have a 24% chance with 8 points.

how many applications were there for the 511 buck and 511 doe tags?

YearCalculation
(existing points * multiplier + 1)
Total Times Your Application Goes Into the Lottery
10 * 0 + 11
21 * 2 + 13
32 * 2 + 15
43 * 2 + 17
54³ + 165
65³ + 1126
76³ + 1217
87³ + 1344
98³ + 1513
109³ + 1730

I have no idea, I'm just giving you the percentages game and fish put out. Your looking at it wrong, yes your application went in 217 times, but everyone has tons of points for muzzy so it's basically meaningless, It's called point creep. As you can see from this thread many don't even get drawn with 9 or 10 points.

The muzzy situation is the exact reason why we could never have a points system for the big three. Everyone would have so many points that nobody would have a chance at drawing until they were 80 years old with 60 points.

The first lottery application process – deer gun, muzzleloader, youth and landowner – had more than 107,000 applicants, and just under 53,000 were unsuccessful.

Much like my sex life, I got denied...lol. Maybe next year. 3rd straight year being rejected in 2f2. Oldest daughter has her youth once in a lifetime tag so it'll still be a great fall helping her fill her tag.
