I havent been put into this situation before. My 14 year old vizsla is going down hill. It appears almost like he has dimentia and the last week or so he has been crapping all over the house. How long does a guy wait before making the final decision? Can the rebound? or do I need to suck it up and make that decision?

14 is getting pretty old for most dog breeds. It sucks no matter what age but he's had a good long life. Good luck man!

Either way you think of it as deal with the mess or take him behind the shed. The former you get to spend more time with him if he isnt suffering or your household doesnt want to clean up a mess. Personally i would take him to the vet see if there is something they can do and spoil the shit out of him everyday.

My condolences on your situation. Been there more times than I want to say. When faced with that situation, I ask myself, "Am I keeping them in whatever condition they are for my good or for theirs?" Sometimes you have to love them enough to let them go with grace and dignity. No shame, no disgrace, no dishonor.

What KDM says, in the end it's not about you losing them, it's about you loving them enough to let them/help them go 😪😭😭before they get too bad. Make the decision sooner than later.........for him\her not you.

Hard desicion but do what's best for the animal. Had a lab go 12.5 that was used to hunting daily in her prime seemed the joints went bad at 8 or so and no hunting after that just a walk around the town was all. In the end she was still eating but laying on her side but carrying out the door to bathroom for a while. I just couldn't let go but your own life shouldn't be impeded to keep a old partner alive. I lost some prime time of my own life caring for or not doing working what I needed to do I'm paying for it now.

Toughest part of owning a dog when to make that decision. Could have the vet check him out and see what’s going on to help with what to do. When the time comes sit in the room with him till the last breath we owe them that.

To this day i question myself whether i waited to long or not long enough. I believe there really is no right answer other then whats in your heart. A vet can maybe help you steer in the right direction depending on the diagnosis. When we put our pup down i kept asking myself would i want to live like that and am I just keeping him alive for my own selfish reasoning and comfort. Thoughts and prayers with you and your family as it truly is one of the hardest decisions we have ever had to make. I as well as a large number of us on this website know what your going through and its a tough time that is foresure and hope and pray for a positive outcome for you.

With our 1st dog, the vet commented on "quality of life"....didn't take long to make up our minds, but still a tough decision.

Vet visit and go from there. So sorry to hear that the end is near. Very hard decision, but we never know how bad they are actually suffering because they would do anything to stay with you if they could. 🙏
