I have done CPR twice, both at work as a security guard and always had 2 of us there and we lost both but you have to try. Hope your record ends better than mine. I second what others have said, sounds like you did right and gave the person the only chance he might have had. Even if he doesn't make it don't let it stop you from trying again if needed.

Good job for stopping and doing what you could. Don't give a second thought to the "What if's". You can't change any of them. If you find you must dwell on a "What If", then dwell upon this: "What if I hadn't stopped? The guy wouldn't have had any chance at all."

I'd be more inclined to be introspective about my own life and priorities. Refocus on what's really important and try to un-burdon yourself of the petty or unimportant.

We never 'want' to be in a situation such as that, but when it does happen just be glad that you were the one that stopped. Most would just gawk as they drive by and do absolutely nothing.

I witnessed a similar event many years ago as a youngster.Three adults standing outside of the vehicle discussing if the individual wasdrunk or not. What had happened is he was pulling into a fast food restaurantand had a heart attack and drove into a picnic table. A fourteen year old boycame out and started to give CPR to the gentlemen. He had learned how toadminister CPR at Boy Scouts. The adults just stud there and watched. So you definitelydid the right thing by helping. You did all you could do so don’t dwell on theshould of could of. My hats off to you SIR.

Way to go Vollmer. Like many have said don't dwell on the woulda coulda's. You gave him a fighting chance. I think its important for everybody to take a CPR class. Never know when it might help to save a loved one or a complete stranger.

Unfortunately I have had to do cpr on someone as well. It did not result in success either. Was told by someone who taught our class that rarely works but still needs to be done for the off chance that it can work. In my instance it led to a week or two of sleepless nights but u cant dwell on it cause u never know if the next time u do it there could be a good result.

Take it from this guy it works. I had an opportunity to need it at the end of June thank god the right guy came along. I had about a 10% chance to make a full recovery and i did it. I still have sore ribs but no complaints here. Just glad to be back

Excellent job Vollmer! You did what you could. I'm an EMT and the one thing we were told in class is that not everyone is savable. Trust me, we don't save everyone. CPR certainly betters the odds but we were told that only 7% of people survive a heart attack(not sure if that was the problem) outside of a hospital setting. Did the medics use the Lucas device? Just curious.

Glad you made it thru, was thinking yesterday I had not seen any posts from you. I am sure you know that there was a reason you made it, God bless..

V, any update on the guy you helped?

Either way great job, once again. Hope to never need it, or have the opportunity to give it.

never did CPR but i was at a buddys lake place and i could hear a loud kind of groaning coming from across the bay probably half mile away by road but could hear it clear as day across the water, we were sittting at our camp fire having a few drinks and i decided i was gonna walk down to see what was going on, when i got there i could hear rustling in the cabin and looking through the sliding glass door stuff was thrown all over the place, it had looked like somebody had gotten in a fight in the living room upon entering the cabin i saw the man laying on the floor in the hall way holding his chest and sweating profusely i thought he was having a heart attack and upon further inspection of the kitchen i found an insulin bottle and a syringe on the floor so i figured it had something to do with diabetes, well being the smart guy i am i never even thought to bring a phone, so i had to run back to the cabin in my flip flops.. losing both of them along the way and then had my friends call 911 then ran back to the guy and not knowing what to do all i could do was hold his hand as he gave me a look like i have never seen before, finally paramedics got there and i helped to hold him down as he was starting to convulse and they loaded him up with some sort of a solution with an IV and 30 seconds later he was sitting up on his own and talking normally.. quite crazy! my friends had walked over after calling 911 and on the way had spoken to a neighbor who was curious as to what was going on, the neighbor had known that the guy was a bad diabetic and had mentioned that he was drinking earlier in the day and that he did this to himself, i asked him if he had heard the guy moaning as he lived right next door, and he said yes he did and that this isnt he first time and that he has a problem, so that is the first time i have ever ripped into an older man 65-70 i would guess, telling him he was a terrible person for just letting the guy suffer of over there knowing full well what was going on and did nothing... even if the guy was my enemy i wouldnt let something like that happen to someone... just dont understand some people, but that is my story... no mouth to mouth involved.
