The Superintendent of Public Instruction is a non-partisan office voted upon every four years ago. In Fargo 2016 Baesler won at the Republican convention beating Joe Chiang. I visited with him the night before the vote and he won my vote.

He went on to the primary and lost again.

BISMARCK, ND - Statement to the Public From Superintendent Kirsten Baesler
Wednesday, March 4, 2020
“A week ago, I made an extremely poor decision when I got in my vehicle and drove after drinking alcohol. I recognize even more clearly today how deeply I disappointed so many people.
As a former teacher and a life-long learner, I understand that it is important to learn from your mistakes. To that end, I have decided to work with professional counselors in a formal treatment program to address my personal struggles regarding alcohol.
I understand and appreciate the need for the state superintendent to be an example for the students she serves. This incident was certainly one of my worst moments, and I’m so sorry.
It’s important to me to set an example by taking responsibility for my actions, with humility, and to learn from my mistakes -- and with the help of professionals, that is exactly what I intend to do, with determination, humility and hard work to make amends for my mistakes.
I am asking for forgiveness, and the grace needed to get back up and take on my life with dedication and joy.

I remain committed to the work and results we are achieving at the Department of Public Instruction. I am proud of the work that my team and I have accomplished.
While I take this time to prioritize my health and well-being, I will recommit myself with even greater intention and focus toward serving North Dakota’s students and their families with passion and dedication.
I ask that you please don’t allow this mistake of mine to undo all the good work we have begun and all we have yet to accomplish together.
Today I commit to you that I will work diligently – one day at a time -- to earn back your trust.”
--Kirsten Baesler, North Dakota Superintendent of Public Instruction

Doesn't sound like she intends to resign or not run for re-election in November...time will tell. If she ultimately chooses not to run...or loses her re-election bid, as an educator, what will her job prospects look like? Thinking she'll be hard pressed to find another position with a starting salary well north of $100K per year.

Yes, it seems like she isn't stepping down, or pulling back from her job.

I guess, time will tell. In my book, she now has two strikes. If she cleans up her act, stops breaking laws, she could still be effective in her job. If not, then she really needs to consider working outside the public spotlight.

Crazy question here and I’m sure I’m way out of line, but Does anyone actually know if she is good at her job? Have things in the school system been going in the right or wrong direction since she started her tenure?
I don’t know the answer, but that would mean more to me than any of this other stuff that seems to make her famous. She should get her act together a bit for sure, but I would like to know how she actually does at what she has been elected to do.

It reminds me of politics in general...people get more hung up on the personal lives and history of candidates rather than who might be the best at the actual job.

If she is going to take time off and go into treatment with the "drive" to get better and stay away from alcohol in her future, I am all for giving her another chance. As she certainly has a drinking problem by the looks of her record a couple of them have been from drinking from what i have been told if this is true.
If she is not going to go into treatment then i think she should really be re-evaluating her options and life.
Our good Lord and I both know i have made enough mistakes in my day too and i have been given second chances too and luckily i learned from my mistakes. Not perfect in any way so don't take it wrong as sometimes it took a couple years to get my "act" together in my younger years!
Just my 2 cents.
