Here's a sans alcohol theory that works. Left his phone (a light source) in truck. Maybe got in trouble/injured right at or after dark when he wrecked his wheeler. Maybe he had no other headlamp/flashlight so his choice was to try to find his truck. Cold/hurt he tries to find his pickup, gets lost in cattails and water and doesn't make it out.

Or maybe he suffered from a diabetic shock issue, stroke, mild heart attack, you name it. That's what actually caused him to crash? Who knows. So in my mind it was likely not anybody's "fault" - even his own - just a horrible accident.

Not that it matters. It's horrible either way. Take home message for me is "be prepared" with backup light source or whatever if/when you can.

I've thought several times that maybe a heat sensing camera on a drone would have found him. Some day we'll have stuff like that for the lost - not just the criminals.

Prayers for his family to have gone through all that time - then this. :(

I didnt mean to imply that alcohol was involved, its just a possibility that crossed my mind. Most people that tip their wheeler would just tip it back over and keep on riding, unless he was knocked silly or severely injured in the process.

That's the only option that makes any sense and even that is still messed up. So he was going to sleep in his truck....that still doesn't answer why hes out driving around on an ATV three hours after dark. So far we are at 2+2=27.

I see you're practicing common core.

He had to be messed up in the head either from injury or other such medical reasons or a ton of alcohol you would have to think. By the time he crashed (somewhere after 8pm) it was already getting quite cold. No person in their right mind would ever crawl through cattails and freezing water. Now there is a chance that he went into hypothermia before getting to the water and in that case it would make sense to find him in the water since the last stage of hypothermia is you feel like you're burning up.

Guy probably nailed it in first scenario. Alcohol or not. Crash. No light. Crazy dark. Get confused on where the pickup is. Go the wrong way. End up in slough. Tragedy. Entering water is the weird part though

no matter what the cause of death was it is something i could see happening to anyone of us myself included i know i've put myself in a few hairy situations where things came out ok, should something have gone the other way for me i could be in the same boat. terrible thing that happened to an avid outdoorsman and a great guy, i didnt know him personally but a few of my close friends did a lot of waterfowl hunting with him and apparently he was one hell of a guy very very sad story prayers to all his family and friends.

can anyone point on a map where he was found? i thought i found the intersection where the search party was congregating. but, there are a few houses within a mile of that. so, it leaves me a bit more perplexed than anything. i also know a few folks from that area that knew him. nobody has anything but good to say about him. bad deal.

I don't duck hunt anymore, however found myself in some "sinky" sloughs back when, and a guy can get pretty wiped out trudging through that, now add fifty pounds of weight gain, and 20 years of age, and I would likely not make it out of some of the places I would back when.

Sad deal, sorry for the family.

Hopefully they unearth the COD after examining the body. That might help shed some clues (i.e. heart problem, stroke, injuries from crash, hypothermia, etc.). The body was found in the cattails and in water but not submerged, which leads me to believe he didn't drown...

Sad deal, yes, but given what is known so far, I'm still
