It's around .79 in the Bis/man area as of last week depending on which supplier you call, heard talk of .69 from one already.

How much propane does one go through on an average ND winter?

I have been fortunate to always have NG in my homes

Is there anyway to monitor the levels in those tanks? I'm new to propane and will be heating my new house with it this winter. Any recommendations on buying vs. renting the tanks? It's my understanding that lumping the tank into the mortgage is the best/cheapest way to go.

Buy it if you can and get a 1000 gallon one. They do come with a gage.

The tanks have a gauge on them. They only fill them to 85% capacity.
Buy a tank that way you can buy your propane from whoever you want or whoever is cheaper. If you lease you are stuck with them filling your tank and can charge you whatever they want.
Definitely go 1,000 gallon tank. Whoever you buy it from will deliver, level, and set your tank. You will probably have to pay extra for a line to be buried from the tank to the house. Put a fitting in the line so you can run a short line to your garage if you ever want to heat that.

I have two 1,000 gallon tanks and a 98% efficient furnace installed about 5 years ago and a propane hot water heater in an old 50's era roughly 2000 square foot house and a shoddy insulated 35x25 11foot high ceiling shop with about a 2% efficient old overhead resnor propane heater and together use an average of 1100 gallons a year consistently over the 18 years of living here. without the shop the house uses right at 700+- gallons a year depending on how much wood we burn in the wood stove.

Great advice. I also have an addional hose with a valve and fitting so I and the neighbor can fill small propane tanks.

Cenex has a deferred billing summer fill program I have used for several years. They fill you when they get to you which is usually late spring and it is guaranteed to be no higher than the price at fill up but they lock in the lowest price of the summer and if you pay within a week of the billing in august its another 5% off that price too, plus I have a patronage account there and get most of my gas and diesel there too so get about 200-300 bucks a year back in dividends.

We also had the valve and hose for filling our smaller propane tanks. Get ripped off in town.
Miss those big tanks after moving to town, at least for filling the smaller tanks.

Is it legal to fill your own tanks with your bigger home tank? I could be wrong, but for some reason I didn't think it was legal.

I have a 3900 sqft home, leaky windows and doors to the tune of about 1400 gallons of propane a year. Own my own tank, which is a plus and minus as I am in the process of painting it.

Anyone familiar with the inspection and testing requirements on home propane tanks?
