One tip I have is to bring your kids to the public library kids once a week. Our grands look foreword to that and it's a great tool. It gets parents involved to see what they are interested in and what they are good at and encourage accordingly.

It's from a movie bt accurate. I worked for a local rancher who home scooled his 3 kids. Their vocabulary was incredible.

My daughter has mentioned, on more than one occasion, the admiration she has for PAPER books.

She has also mentioned, on more than one occasion, she was very happy we shared that with her growing up.

Read to your kids every day. Buy them books and fill their rooms with them. IMO it’s one of the best ways for them to learn AND enjoy it.

We read to our boys every night and to this day, 30+ years later, they are still into reading books. My wife tried the Kindle, didn’t like it, liked the feel of paper also. I’m still a big reader, daily newspaper, magazines, and I’ve always got a book by my night stand.
I don’t think many kids read outside school.

I gave my 12 yr old foster child the book The Boy the Mole the Fox and the Horse yesterday. She can't read it because its in cursive. Can you believe it. She is straight A student and was not taught the cursive alphabet.

You know what’s worse?

They don’t even stress NEAT printing anymore! Our daughter’s hand writing was so sloppy you could barely read it. When we brought it up to her teacher (at the time) do you know what she said?

“WE don’t emphasize that anymore.” “It’s not as important as it once was”

Yeaaaaah….that wasn’t going to fly. Her hand writing is impeccable. Thanks to her mother and I!!

I looked earlier and it seems like a local school board and state w/ legislator involved. I'm pretty sure it boils down to the local school board committee who decides what is taught though. That's just from a quick gander earlier today. I'm not sure how important it is but I had a funny thought. If I can find a letter from my homeschooled Granddaughter I'll post it. She had to do cursive so she decided to write us a letter but she was so young she hadn't had enough spelling yet so you can hardly read it. Had there been homeschool when I was a kid , I'd a totally different person. Public school education was like prison to me.

My Mom read to my sister and I every night before bed when we were under the age of 5. Both my sister and I were reading before kindergarten and in school I was a huge bookworm. We had the book it program from pizza hut when I was in grade school, I always maxed that sucker out and ate lots of personnal pan pizzas, I still read alot, at least a little bit every night before bed.
