Hunting ducks was slough jumping or over floating decoys growing up. Big spreads in the fields were unheard of then. Funny how there were always ducks around until ice up back then. Now, You can get your tail kicked for talking about jumping a slough or "roost busting"......what a bunch of B.S. For those of you that like to field hunt, Have fun and shoot some birds. For those that jump sloughs, all power to ya. Good luck to both tomorrow.

We used to field decoy in the morning and if that wasn't fully successful, we would jump in the afternoon. I enjoyed both.

I've often wondered if the guys who jump shoot sloughs to say they killed some ducks or geese on opening weekend, before they then go back to deer hunting, would think its ok if I took my bow and went stomping through the bedding area of the deer they are sitting in a stand waiting for. I mean its if its legal, I should be able to do it right?
i dont bow hunt. ive spent the early to mid stages of my life chasing waterfowl. every weekend. the last 10-15 years ive spent at least 3 days a week in the field from sept thru jan. i started hunting puddles as a youngster. the field hunting has gotten overly competitive the last few years and i guess im just tired of throwing money and time away scouting only to find 4 other trucks looking to hunt the same field. it is what it is i guess. if u want to look down on me from your high horse i honestly dont fucking care. ive got better shit to do than fight over a field.

Sounds to me like you want to bust some roosts out of spite more than anything.

yep howd u know. im all about pissing away money to spite someone i dont even know. i dont have time to spite people. and i guess the avian gaysex crowd doesnt comprehend the fact that you can actually hunt water without busting a roost. they probably didnt show that in their rad kick-ass videos.

I like when I am in a field and people hunt water gets the birds moving. Over all I used to hunt waterfowl alot if it wasn't for my dogs I have lost interest in big spreads in the field. now I can do just as good with 6 floaters and the robo. Only shoot a few hundred a year now but might change as kid is getting into it. Elk and mule deer have taking over my interest don't have to worry about people as most are to lazy to go where I will.

man have I had a belly full of everyone telling everyone else the right/wrong way to hunt, drink, eat, speak, drive, dress, breath....

good grief

Haha and only the night before opener. If it weren't for all the sky busting, roost busting, bird educating idiotic, out of state, late to the marsh, setting up next to you, 12 robo duck using, spineless, heartless, dickless, inbred jackwagons out there, we would all get a limit. If you are a waterfowler, seems that is what most do.

Personally, everybody shoot after start time, before quitting time, count your cripples and lost birds, give yer buddies crap for missing, encourage your kids when they miss, stay safe and have a hell of a time! To each their own.

Most threads ending up jumping the tracks or someone always hijacks it...seems to be the norm. apparently...so relax, its friday....

Drove from Williston to Minot today....check water holes along the way...didn't see much....so I'll bring up this question, might be dumb..here goes....do the ducks just sit there in the water when its a down pour or do the take cover some where?

the reason I ask that is...I've never gone hunting for ducks in a down pour even tho everyone claims its the best time to hunt...so hence the question....I've always hunted moderate to nice days....so I'm backwards to everyone else I guess....

I just realized that tomorrow will be the first time in about 17 years I didn't go out for opener. Crazy, the older I get the more I'd rather sleep in and treat my body like an amusement park.....

To the OP, I'm headed out, crappy weather or not. Jumping sloughs just because I can. I only have a few hours in the evening to get out.
