Don't shoot an M2 KDM. I'd hate to see a long term relationship go south.

also - is there an interesting/tragic story behind the new barrel?

What is an M2?

- - - Updated - - -

Sorry, I gather now you meant "12"

I must add, two advantages of the 870 IHO are the twin action bar and fewer parts.

The M12 steel and workmanship are exquisite and would now only be available in a custom gun. It carries and points like a double (I prefer "nickle steel" versions) and all could be could be converted to 3in (from the factory!) without worry. They were made on the correct frame for gauge and proved their durability in actual war. BBl swaps are possible as only the yoke and receiver need to match.

The ultimate demise of the 12 incorporated never wearing out, cost of work and later being made in Japan.

Find "your" Model Twelve and all other slides will become shi'ite.

Shot several model 12's as they were the preferred scatter gun for 2 of my uncles and a slew of other guys and my Dad had one for a time. Nice guns no doubt, but not an 870 wingmaster 3" mag pump. The original 870, NOT the express or whatever they call that matte finish thing. THAT I don't like. As far as the barrel replacement. A while back I noticed the end of Bertha's barrel was bulged right at where the choke tube and the barrel are threaded together. Nearest I can figure I shot a load of steel that had rusted together into a slug and when I shot the slug the choke tube caused it to stop for a time and the barrel bulged before the slug broke up and left the gun. Never heard or felt anything out of place. A barrel replacement later and Bertha and I are back to killin' stuff.

I got the 870 wingmaster 3" my dad bought in 1978. I have had other shot guns they are all sold. Me and that 870 have a connection.

You're just shocked with facts and being contrary. :)

I have my brother's 1970s wingmaster 870 and it's a beauty. So much finer than today's garbage.

I too started off with an 870. After a broken stock and some ejector issues, it has been retired in favor of a Benelli M2. Guy and I have good taste.

I have my Great Grandfathers 870 wingmaster and my father in law's Model 12 here for the fall season. Dad is coming up in a couple weeks and will carry the Wingmaster and the wife will be using her dad's 12. Looking forward to getting out again with dad and having my son along too.

The Model 12 was built in 1925

M2s all around!!

Just wish I had splurged for the camo dipped finish. The matte barrel sucks Hillary balls. Not as bad as an 870 Express matte barrel, but close.

I also have an M2 and love it, however I own 2 870's as well and if theres a gun that cant be destroyed its my 870's. it doesn't matter how dirty, muddy, cold, hot, etc it fires and fires nicely.

- - - Updated - - -

only flaw I found is they do not like federal blue box ammo and jam often

my m2 hates the cheap Winchester expert steele ammo and I have 3 cases of it sitting in my basement so 870 it will be most of the year for me, and next year, and the year after etchaha

I've never had a malfunction or fail-to-feed with my M2. That thing eats any garbage round you can finagle.

agreed - with exception of some "light" target crap someone gave me

something is amiss - send it to Benelli and tell them to fix it

or clean the thing - ha hah

mine misfed at skeet with some odd rounds one day this summer - two drops of oil from BedWetter's Technical Van and off we went (I tend to run things with as little oil as possible)

Not bashing Semi Autos in the least, but hunting out of a layout blind where dust, dirt, rocks, chaff, and all manner of material falls onto your gun has caused most of the popular makes and models of semi auto to jam, misfeed, stove pipe rounds, or some other such event which causes the hunter to miss opportunities at birds. I've personally witnessed it. I've watched Benelli's, Winchesters, Remingtons, Mossbergs, Brownings, Berettas, and a few european jobs fail to cycle, fire, or jam after a few repetitions of coming out of a layout blind. I've had to watch the frustration and disappointment in some very good friends eyes when their guns don't work and I can't help but feel bad for'em. A good cleaning later and they are working fine. Time afield is precious. Too precious to have equipment that can let you down IMO. That's why I shoot what has worked EVERY TIME for me. Flame me if you feel the need, but when I want to kill stuff, you'll see me carrying Bertha or a sister of hers until I can no longer participate in the scatter gun sports. They just flat out shoot, regardless of the conditions.

I've had a number of stuck shells etc. with my 870s too. I own an express, wingmaster, and special field. If you shoot dirty ammo and/or get mud and such in guns it tends to hose them up - pump or auto.

Ditto. I'd almost considered returning my 870 when I first got it because of all the stuck shells and jams. Eventually I guess it happened enough that it "broke in" and it works well now.

Had no such break-in period with the M2. It's worked as it should since Day 1, in layout blinds and out, from south Texas coastal duck hunts to shooting black ducks during a sub-freezing winter storm in Prince Edward Island, Canada.

It all boils down to maintenance in general for all guns. Even new out of the box, you should clean it before you fire, no matter how clean it looks. I did that to my stoeger 20 ga last year....actually like that little bugger, its light, can walk all day with it, Looking forward to it next weekend. Funny thing about stuck shells....Have a pump 20 ga coast to coast (acutally a mossberg 500) Fiochii shells would stick, but shoot fiocchii in my stoeger, cycles fine..hmmm....so the fiocchii shells are for the stoeger in this house...lol...blue box federals shot fine out of my 870, fact that things shoots just about any shell I throw at it. Had any issue with it last year when it jammed but that was a part failure. fixed now and it rock and rolls....its just a tad heavy for going on long walks tho.

Discipline of cleaning your guns is a must.

Teach it to your kids as a part of the hunt, they will carry on with it.

Extractors are getting weak on mine. Never had a choke tube just a full 28" bbl. Only cleaned it if wet other than that it works every time. I like when people with 2 tubers are reloading and I am still killing.
