I have never really tried very hard to target pike, probably give it a whirl this year. When I have its usually a couple tip ups that the fishing partners bring and normally just use cheap red hotdog (seems to work). are there any other tips or suggestions on tip ups or for using a jigging rod? I have a couple older med heavy rods and 2 tip ups that are just collecting dust.

I am going to TRY TRY TRY, using the stuff I currently have, even when the bite is slow, rather than listening to coffee shop/bar stool/ banter and how "you have to try this" "caught a bunch of them with this" "my friends older sister's husband's cousin's nephew got them to bite on this" It seems I have enough to throw at them at any given time. Stay away from stores and online hahaha.. Good luck with that as I just HAD to go out an get me a new ice reel since it was onsale and had to go get it. haha

Yeah I have been looking at rods and reels, lord knows I have enough, but I like having extras in case I take someone that doesn't have anything or very much equipment. Planning on getting another newbie to ice fishing out again this year but the only thing that stinks is only having one flasher for two people.

You can convert a boat graph pretty cheap.

I almost traded in my ice trip to Winnipeg for a trip to the Columbia River, then I thought about it and decided both trips should prob happen this year!

I want to use my new-to-me Nanook that I got all decked out this weekend, my vexilar I got late last year (didn't get to use it) and want to try out Rice Lake in Emmerson County - reading looks good but nobody I know has ever fished it.

If your talking about Rice lake in Emmons county, south of Strasburg, that lake gets hit quite a bit. I had heard they were doing decent about 2-3 years ago down there. I went and only caught two tiny perch, it was actually my worst trip all year.

I did have some great perch fishing about 15 years ago though..:)

Here is an update so far this ice season.
Tried using more lipless cranks, small psycho shad and rippin rap with minor success but enough to be gaining confidence. Flutter spoons instead of rattle spoons as well. Haven't ran plastics a bunch but have been doing ok.
Made myself a battery box for cell phone charger to carry with, started working on comfort additions to my flipover and got a new rod case (eagle claw) that I am currently finding pros and cons.
Tried one new to me lake this season and have been on 4 different total.
Overall I have done ok but have found its been a little tough as of late my last 5 outings, weather isn't helping either.

How has everyone else done so far with what they wanted to try?

I've done more, trying new lakes. Pretty good success, really.

I'm also doing less of relying on others info, and figuring things out for myself. (or as a group with fishing partners)

Nervous minnows are awesome. We did very well on them last year ID like to try and catch salmon or ling on the big lake this winter.

From posts back in the day I read salmon are in schools and suddenly rip through your spread like piranhas. I'm ASSuming tip ups. Damned if I'd be over the water where I think they'd be. Creeps me out. If you're hellbent, I believe you should do some smelt research and jig a Castmaster.

That Nervous Minnow looks good too.

My back hurts drill move drill move. I would like to try an early spring and a mild winter next year to the point that the water doesn't freeze. Ice fishing overrated
