Well, the time came that at 4 a.m. on June 3 when my very pregnant wife elbowed me in the ribs and told me to get up and call the hospital. She was dripping wet and gasping for breath. I was informed her contractions started at 3:30 and she hopped in the shower hoping they would abate.
Well, they didn't, and now they were coming 3-4 minutes apart. So I jingled the hospital to inform them of our impending arrival, and then called in the inlaws to being their 3-hour drive from the cities. Finally, I called my buddy to come over and house sit so my 2-year-old had someone there when he woke up.
It was now 4:30 and we were on the road. Wife's water broke en route.
Got to the hospital and the ladies in the birthing area were taking their sweet time. Finally got around to checking the little woman only to inform us, "oh, you're complete!"
No time for epidural. After a few rounds of contractions, kiddo No. 2 emerges at 5:43 -- little over 2 hours from the first signs she was ready to rock. Had I been a less intelligent man, I would have cleaned up and headed out for work! But, alas, I decided to take the rest of the day and following week off. A choice I am definitely not regretting.
So meet Lauren Caroline! She was 8 pounds, 7 ounces and 20.5 inches long. Kiddo No. 1 and both hounds are enamored with her. I'm sure that'll wear thin eventually, but for now she's new and fun and everyone loves her.
I think she's pretty cool, too.
