Is the heskett power plant that pipes the co2 underground? I remember reading an article of a power plant in north Dakota that was the first in the nation to pipe co2 gas under ground into old oil wells then when the well couldn't hold anymore co2 it would be capped off. Would be great to see that kind of system utilized when they retrofit this power to use natural gas. Zero emissions would be great especially since we have the technology to do it already here in north Dakota

Why's it a bummer? We have more than enough cleaner burning
natural gas to replace it.

ya.....ask Xcel about having more than enough Natural Gas.....and lets see the $$$ of electricity as natural gas prices rise!!!!

Good - Montana-Dakota plans to construct a new 88-megawatt natural gas peaking unit at the Heskett Station, projected to come online as early as 2023, said spokesman Mark Hanson. The company anticipates filing a request with the North Dakota Public Service Commission this fall to outline why the project is the best option for customers.

Bad - Thirty people work for Lewis & Clark Station, for a combined 77employees at the two locations.Montana-Dakota estimates about 10 employees will be needed to operate natural gas-fired combustion units at the two sites.

Well I have electric now and would give anything to be heated by natural gas where I spend a 1/3 more money to heat using electric or natural gas. North Dakota is finally getting natural gas plants to convert the abundant amount of natural gas to a liquid which can be sold to power other areas where natural gas is not available. It's a win for north Dakota where instead of burning it off as a wasted by product of oil fraking

Natural gas is cheaper to heat with than electricity yes. I’m not sure if it still is, but it had been subsidized in the part though. Here’s the part you don’t understand though. Natural gas has been at rock bottom lows for the past 5 years or so. That because of an abundance of that resource. One there is a power market better established, it will go up. Probably quite a bit. In turn, electricity prices will go up as it will cost more to make it. Coal is the cheapest form of electricity in this area. It will cost more when we switch over to natural gas. That’s a fact. If that wasn’t the case, we wouldn’t be begging companies to put generation up.

So yeah, natural gas generated electricity isn’t a bad thing. It’s a good use of wasted gas, but it will cost us more period. I can’t put a cents per kw/hr to it, but it’s more.

Does anyone know if there will still be the need to use river water to cool something there by continuing to produce a warm water discharge which could leave the fishing in the Heskett area unchanged?

Dakota Gasification Company which is located NW of Beulah is likely what you are referring to.

Yes I agree just like how much it cost more to generate wind turbine power electricity where the electricity is bought at off peak prices. I have not noticed the price change but I have heard from others the ones who notice these things that after the wind turbines were put into the power grid that their electric bills went up.
Natural gas seems to be so abundant we are burning it off only time will tell

This is the only part of this that I care about.

I'm going to be the reverse of the crying indian, looking at the garbage.

They're going to tear out the coal-burning plant, and replace with a cleaner burning gas plant, and I'll stand there watching, with a tear in my eye.

Instead of sitting on a war pony, I'll be standing on the steps in my waders, with a few ratty old rapalas stuck in my hat (and some DH lures in my pocket).

Truthfully, the fishing should remain unchanged in 2019 and 2020, and only change partway through 2021. And between now and then, a LOT can happen.

To get it out of my system, I'm going to have to fish a LOT in the next 900 days. Probably about 850 times or so.

Then probably have to bite the bullet, and go buy a leaky old scow.
