Oil based stain for sure, no clear coat. Do every 2-3 years even if you think it doesn't need it. Make sure its clean and dry when you restrain it.

10-12 years ago I put Trex Ultra decking on the deck on the north side on my house. (12x28) The grade I bought was the second one down from the most expensive one that they had at Menards. After around 2-3 years it started to fade. Other then the fading it has held up great, no cracking, splintering, peeling or warping.

The deck on the south side of the house is cedar and needs to be replaced, (8x18) Any sugestions on what composit to use? Would like one that doesn't fade.

I just stained my deck again this summer. I am wanting this to be my last time and might fork out the money and go maintenance free.

One last stupid question. If it may rain tomorrow, would it be OK to stain today? So how many hours should it be before getting it wet?

Hopefully you let the deck weather a bit. Work in the shade if possible.
