The question is did he not see it coming or was he trying to skip it through. Most long track sleds are fully capable of driving indefinitely on water so long as you don't slow down. Now to try it with a load of fishing gear isn't very bright if that's what he did or to try it with a short track trail sled. Watched guys doing it off the fox island ramp a few years ago shaking my head. Spot like fox you go in your screwed with the current that's going to try and take you under the ice.

i got a question -- i am not a sled head --- you say capable --- i am assuming though you have to gun it right at the time of hitting the water correct?? its something that may be automatic like know on a bike how much gas to give to achieve the correct type of wheely -- however on a bike it has to be done perfectly to make it work. Is that a good comparision?

just gotta keep the clutches up and out of the water, or have sealed clutches...

i have a cousin who is an engineer/test rider for polaris... not sure bout anymore, but back in the day (mid 80"s) they would take new stock sleds off the line and haul them to lake of the woods to run them on the ice to do production tests... they would go until late in the spring when the snow was gone... they would start on shore and ride them through the water up to 100 yards, then bounce them up onto the ice... at the end of the day, run them through the water and back to shore...

i know they used to have sled races in the river at thief river falls every summer...

what an awful accident... hopefully it was preceded by a full life... prayers to all...

The thing with sleds is they are designed to more or less hydroplane on powdered snow. Well when push comes to shove liquid water is considerably more dense than powder therefore the sleds do extremely well on it so long as you don't try to stop! In this video these are older model short tracks and still they excel at running over water.....well till one of them stops!;:;badidea would guess he killed the motor with sucking in to much water. The thing about this scenario is that there are two things we would need to know 1. Was he weighted down with gear or pulling a house 2. If not did he do what alot of people tend to do just by Instinct and slam on the brakes instead of punching the throttle? I've only water run once and it was in CO at night and only a ten foot hole. My first Instinct was to slam on the brakes but luckily I overruled myself instantly and slamed the throttle and went across it like it was nothing but needless to say a change of shorts was in order!

Modern sleds don't even need the skis.

My condolences to the family and friends , May he RIP. I cringe every time I drive around Metigoshe and see sled tracks under the bridge , There were 2 or 3 fresh tracks two days ago, Up here it's daredevils having fun but I always think of some kids or anyone for that matter anyone who is not aware of their surroundings and following someone else's trail. Something for extreme riders to keep in mind.

I'm surprised someone hasn't made a picklefork hydroplane that you buckle a snowmobile into for a fun summer boat, It would be a nifty riveboat that would pass jet skis like they were standing still.

I had seen something like that in a video a few years back. it was a search and rescue outfit that could go off ice into water and right back onto a sheet of ice. looked like a slick outfit
