Is there any chance the g&f will ever implement any sort of point system or anything that will help or benefit long time applicants to this system? Residents that have been applying for 30+ years that never have drawn and then new residents that have been here just long enough to apply. Anyone think something will be done in the future or is this the way it will stay forever?

Id also like to see preference points accumulate indefinitely until you are drawn, just cuz you dont apply for a few years doesnt mean you should loose all your points.

I would like to see it happen as well, but unless we voice our opinion, I don't see it happening anytime soon.

I have also been applying for 30 years and am 0 for 3 it sucks. I believe the preference point systems has been looked at and the G&F say's it will not improve your odds because of the sheer numbers that do not get drawn will all have preference points.

I know a few people who have shot multiple elk in ND because they qualify for a gratis tag. That I feel needs to go for a once in a lifetime tag.

Repeated Gratis should go, but if it goes to points system, it will be nothing but a bunch of geriatrics pushing their walker's around by the time they draw. Who the hell wants that? You WILL NOT draw early in life if it goes to a points system. No thanks. If I get to the point where I physically can't go on the hunt anymore, I will start applying for a cow permit. Until then, lets roll the dice!

ya i dont know that a pref points is the best way to go about it but this whole land owners tag thing is kinda ridiculous.... there arent enough elk in our state to make getting a gratis tag the right thing to do in my opinion.. if you cant have a real lottery and only have a once in a lifetime drawing you dont have enough of a herd to have gratis tags IMO

Agreed. But the landowners who get those gratis tags, dont support a bigger herd. Quite the conundrum.

Crazy thing is there seems like there is so much room out west to support a larger elk herd than we have.

does this have anything to do with a majority of the elk herds (west and NE) being on private lands and keeping the private landowner relationship working? I don't know just asking. I kinda feel like the G&F is between a rock and hard place on this one.

Doesn't really seem the gnf sees themselves in the business to promote more hunting opportunities, unless it is more non residents for birds. Yes, I just started down that slippery slope.

We've hashed this out before. I'm not in favor of a points system. But then again, I'm only 29 and only have the bighorn left to go.

Easy keep the gratis tags so long as the land is open the non land owners after the first week. If not open the rancher is only eligible for the chance at a tag five years after having one. The point system is not going to work with the number of tags we are talking about here. I would love to see us hunters start putting some real pressure on the game and fish to stop hammering the damn herd so damn hard. I've never seen a state treat the elk they have as poorly as we do here. We have huge amounts of area that are good for elk from the turtle mountains down through the Sandhills then along the lake as well as the Hart and Missouri rivers. Needless to say the farmers will bitch but nothing new there. We finally have a third herd going in this state and it took an Indian reservation to keep them safe long enough to form up....that in itself is a sad statement on the priorities of our game and fish department.

Im not in favor of the point system at all. I put in for 20 yr with out any tags. My Daughter drew a Elk when she was 17. I was more excited for her to get the tag than if I would have drawn one. I would hope most people would feel that way to. I like when the younger hunters draw a tag. Only a selfish person would want to have a better chance at drawing a tag than a 17 yr old girl or any young hunter.

Because Im older I should have a better chance at drawing a tag that's a bunch of BS

What the hell are you talking about? Younger people have the same chance as an older hunter of drawing the big 3.

Western landowners are dictating a lot of what happens right now. The deal was initially they were supposed to get a gratis every year in exchange for allowing hunting but that isn't happening but they're still getting the tags. There was talk of trying to expand the herd into other areas of the badlands when the elk population was so high in the south unit of the park but a lot of the same landowners didn't want that to happen as they felt there would be competition with cattle and increased elk on the grasslands would lead to decreased grazing allotments for cows. I don't have a problem with a landowner getting a gratis tag but it shouldn't be every year and most landowner's kids and wives have gotten them as well. I think being eligible for one every ten years would be plenty good in a situation where you're looking at once in a lifetime for everyone else.
