From what I have read there are problems brewing on lakes other than Mille Lacs. I have read of complaints about Winni, Rainy, and Vermillion. Plenty of large fish but hard it is hard to get keepers.

Problems aren't brewing on Mille Lacs. They're already there. Been there for a hell of a long time already. natives control the damn thing.

Don't pummel me. I'm not a dyed in wool slot fisherperson. IMHO, it's just a matter of reversing the slot for a few years. It's time to bring in the trophy money. Tim would have this down to a science.

No I would say if they are in need of reversing anything it would be the claim of the natives on fishing. I have no problem with them fishing for profit but I think it should be put in the law that they have to fish the way they used to! You want it to be like it was....well there ya go have your little dip basket back and birch bark canoe and have fun! Absolutely no modern tech including boats to get to and from where they're going. Can't have your cake and eat it too!

dean, its not that simple, infact when your verse is brought up at the many round table meetings I've attended over the years your seen as a racist, say one word against the tribes gill netting and they pull the race card pronto, and yes "tribes" the real issue at hand is the 6 tribes from wisc that are pillaging mille lacs during spawn without any reqard to the health and welfare of our walleye population/conservation,they have been bringing in tons of walleyes every spring for 15 years and now the lake is on the verge of total collasps, however in 2012 and 2013 we had lake ice out and very few nets out except@ the mouth of some feeder streams, the results has been/are two solid year class of walleyes, our dnr calls it a fluke,so today we have a 1 walleye daily limit and the entire lake community is drying up which we feel is the very goal of the tribes as they are buying up all land they can on the lake for pennies on the dollar with casino money and also state/federal funding...now I'm pissed off again!dangit!Total of 8 tribes gill netting, our Mn ojib's were never an issue until this 1837 treaty deal.

so what about Rainy and connected systems? Things ive read dont sound too promising for the future... Lots of big fish, few viable spawners, and even fewer "keep-able" fish.

Slots could work if it was an ever changing slot like say every five years it shifted a few inches up or down, but man that MN reg book is mighty big already.

As far as I'm concerned they lost their right when they sold that fish to restaurants like they did at Red Lake.

I didn't say it was the easy thing to do I just said it's the right thing to do! Are they going to play the race card sure ....what else do thay have to play but it doesn't make them unbeatable. I'm quite frankly shocked that the boats, buildings and gear they use for this hasn't mysteriously disappeared or gone up in flames! The venom the guides and restaurant owners and hotel owners must have in their system right now can make a sane man do insane things.....its only a matter of time before one or more of them crack!

Dean, point taken, infact I'm surprised we have''nt had blood shed by now or at least a rifle slug thru a outboard during the night when they are conducting operations.

eyexr,The out come on operation "square hook" which took 2yrs to complete with thefedsin the fore front(usfw) let the trible members off and turned them over to they're trible court system which resulted in a slap on the hands and business as usuall, the feds then slamed the non native business folks for buying the fish and claimed the only reason the natives netted and sold fish is because they had buyers.$1000's of $$$ in fines to the non natives

- - - Updated - - -

ps~ one of many landings around the lake~then they dump fish for all to see, some cleaned some not, then we have lost gill nets because of shifting ice killing more walleyes,.pike ,musky,perch...

14322194_10155301844223642_6884960906087453028_n.jpg[/QUOTE That's like saying the only reason so many Natives have issues with alcohol is because someone is willing to sell it to them. Stupid ass feds. Is my understanding not correct in that the state DNR has ways to shut them down but chooses not to do that? If that's the case, which I understand it to be, then heads need to be spinning in St. Paul.

At what point do the natives join the ranks of the rest us Americans and start following laws the rest of us do? Its the 2000's for crying out loud. Like Dean said im fine with letting them take fish to carry on their traditions. What they are doing has nothing to do with traditions and everything to do with making money and taking as many fish as possible. Mercury outboards and monofilament gill nets were not part of their traditions. What thier doing has absolutely nothing to do with what thier ancestors did. They don't like following laws that the rest of us do but they have no problem living off the system.

Kind of like when you vote the only way you can whine about change is if you vote those who don't have no horse in the race. Give it a rest already

Who brought the zebra mussels to mille lacs you don't think zebra mussels have any effect on walleye reproduction. Read the article comes right from the horses mouth DNR

So the netting during the spawn is not a problem? Lake Erie has a few walleyes and zebra muscles

Kurtr read the article blaming one doesn't rule out the rest of the given factors to a much bigger problem. I am just saying let's stop pointing a finger at just one problem. I agree shutting down netting during spawning could be a way to help or DNR could just stock the lake with fry as well.

Keep checking in on the Target Walleye page on Facebook discussing slot limits. #interesting

- - - Updated - - -

P.S. Non-fagbook users cannot see as I think it is a Target Walleye exclusive.

Looks like it is a 4 part series and they have done 1-3.
