I don't mind asking for permission to hunt. I don't even mind getting told no. The anticipation of opening day is gone and now feels like a chore instead of a celebration. I seen the change happening in our family and where we used to hunt. People weren't happy that my dad, brother and myself got nice deer over about a 5 year period. They were quick to forget that we took management bucks the other years. Years where we only drew a doe tag, we let it go to waste to ensure more deer for subsequent years.

You see the change on social media where instead of a congratulations, people will come down on a person because there's a red tag hanging off the antler. Hunting practices are scrutinized i.e. how many miles did you walk, do/don't push deer, bow hunting/rifle hunting, etc. Where the hell is the fun of it anymore?

I have to say, this year's opening day brought me to the badlands to help a friend out with his tag. I took a day off of work for someone else's deer hunt when I had a WT buck tag in my pocket for a completely different unit. I haven't had that much fun in years and I knew I wasn't filling a tag.

The people that think they're being singled out because they didn't get a tag; you entered a lottery. The definition of the lottery should settle your argument about a need to change the system so that it suits you. You have opportunities to hunt regardless if you draw a rifle tag in ND. If you disagree with that, then you need to come out from under the rock where you reside.

In conclusion, I'm done applying for 3B3 antlered WT. I'm going to get out of my comfort zone and try some different styles/locations. I'm absolutely at peace with this decision. What scares me is how I'm going to get my little one into deer hunting if I have zero passion for it anymore.

I got more joy and i am pretty sure i was more excited than my boy when he shot his deer this year. It brought back an excitement i havnt had for a while hunting whitetails east river. I still have my tag to fill but i picked sheet rocking over deer hunting this weekend never thought i would do that. When the time comes i bet you will be pumped to just get him out. I am glad i took the plunge and went out west it might only be for a week but it is some thing i look forward to for the whole year. Even having never killed any thing.

I can understand that feeling. A whole new excitement was found for me the moment I sat in my first treestand with a bow. It's unbelievable to me how nerve racking it is to ethically kill a deer with a bow inside 30 yrds, not to mention a nice buck. If you haven't ever tried archery, do it! I'm so glad I took a beginner class and have been hooked ever since.

I'm with ya on this one. I applied for a mule buck tag this year. First time applying for a mule buck in 10+years. I had zero points, and 100% knew i wasn't going to draw a tag, and I'm totally ok with that. For the unit I apply in, I'm guessing it could take 6-8 years before I draw that tag, unless I get very luck. But it's my choice, and I'm ok with that. I want a chance to hunt a giant mule, and the only way I can do that is apply. I still spent opening weekend chasing mulies with by bow, got to spend time with my dad, which with his health issues I don't know how much time we have left, and had an aboslute blast. Him and I are already planning to do it next year, even if we don't draw rifle tags. Haven't even filled the bow tag.

I think people forget what the outdoors is all about. Just spending time with people you love is what it's all about. We are blessed in this state with opportunities that most don't get. Think it's tough hunting here, go to TX and see if you can get a lease? Like the idea of pay to hunt? We are so lucky here.

As far as solving the alleged problem, i have a solution. I get my first choice for deer, elk, moose, big horn, antelope, and can hunt on any land I so choose. I don't need permission because I'm a self entitled prick that thinks my outdoor experience is what's important. I don't care that land owners spend countless hours, planting, grooming and caring for their land. The money they spend is irrelevant to me. I don't care that some farmer and his family go broke trying to make it. ::: Clearly this is sarcasm.

I'm no land owner so I do my fair amount of public land. I am lucky enough to have a landowner friend that gives me limited access. But guess what,(KDM, i'm using you as an example), I bet if I knocked on KDM's door and asked to hunt, he would give me a yes or no answer. Shocking I know. And if he told me no, I wouldn't have permission to hunt land that I wasn't allowed to hunt anyway. No big deal. But knock on enough doors, show respect, build a relationship and you might find access.

I'm not sure why we need to turn our hunting in this state to a socialism experiement. ;:;rant

Walleye:
My son wanted to bow hunt at age 12 or 13 and I was not into it but got a bow for him then he said you need one to.
That was close to 20 years ago and yes that feeling got to me also and enough so that I have not taken my deer rifle out of the rack since then for whitetail hunting.

Kurtr:
My boss has given me a lot of freedom and last year I spent 6 days scouting for the granddaughter out west for mule deer.
Finally she was able to come with her uncle on the seventh day.
Everything about that hunt will be in my mind until the mind goes bad, even the first six days by myself without seeing a single buck. It just took until the seventh day to get in the right spot.

Maybe what is different now than back in the 60s for me is sites like this where you go outside your part of the world and read all that is said on here. Just need to read between all the lines, pick out the good, go to the happy places, focus on the good and ignore the crab. db

just like anything else gratis tags are abused by some. in 2c a lot of gratis are for land that is nothing but black dirt come deer season.
I started bow hunting again when the rifle and black powder tags dried up. so at least we still get deer every year.
I haven't shot a doe on my property in over 15 years.

Maybe the ndgf should give out participation ribbons to those who were unsuccessful in the lottery or in filling a tag. Would that make anyone feel better? :D

Oh I done got myself an unsigned negative rep. How will I ever sleep at night????

Say Davy, you used the phrase "no dog in this fight" in two or more of your posts on this thread. My unsigned neg rep just so happened to mention the same phrase. Hmmmm what a coincidence!

One step closer to the end.
I don't have a dog in this fight because I get a gratis tag and haven't been to meetings to hear both sides of the story so all I know of this issue is what I see from a distance. This is more of a question than an opinion but I cant get past the similarity of having 5 kids and 3 bags of M&Ms Henry wants two bags and Lars and sven and the other two say if Henry gets two, I want two bags too. If you were the responsible Dad would you say lets settle this by dividing them up equally or would you say "You guys should just shake dice for them" ? Same scenario , If you were one of the kids what would you want Your Dad to say ?

Two part honest question for a two part honest answer.

need to know if they are peanut M&M's or not

I did not send you negative rep. You can take that to the bank.

I have had this feeling in the past that some people who don't like someone will give another person an unsigned rep with language that would lead you to believe it's someone else. I am sure I have had that happen. I usually don't say anything and hope that bugs them. :D

My only change in hunting has been the wait for a tag. Years ago I got a tag every year, then it was every other year, now this year I got a tag and it was year number five.

Not sure there is anything we can do about the gratis abusers without hurting the honest landowners too. My relatives stick to their land, but I know for a fact their neighbors don't. If you turn them in they will make things miserable for the relative. Sooooo I have invited the game warden for lunch and to stick around for a little while at our camp. He has the invitation to come any time, and as soon as possible if I tell him I have cookies. Cookies = you need to see this.

What's surprising to me is that someone would actually fall for it.
