Actually the "Sheeple" just want a damn plan. Not a bunch of "they can or they could". Hopefully Becker and his cronies that put this together go back and actually put a real plan together for next time. I know a ton of people that would have voted for it if there was a shred of a plan, me included. Don't leave it up to the officials in Bismarck to come up with the plan.

Glad this went down! Why should people in western ND pay for our stuff? All this bill did was take from those people who have oil rights to pay for everyone else’s stuff. Pay for your own local government.

If it wouldn't have ended property tax, just the valuation, why wasn't it written that way? If people were worried about homes being seized after being taxed out of them, why wasn’t that the bill? Why would you want to see new proposed taxes and levies for eternity as the population and dollar value ebbs and flows. Just because there were unanswered questions after some critical thinking doesn’t mean anyone was fear mongering or a scared sheep.

Why does farmers, who have been paying taxes on land since before American became a country and recieves government subsidized payments not pay taxes. Why does trillion dollar companies like Vanguard and Blackrock get to buy up local property and not have to pay taxes. Why does billionaires like Bill Gates get to buy property up and not have to pay taxes. Why does low income housing apartment complexs not pay taxes and still recieve government taxes for rent. If north dakota wants to change how taxes are structured then elect those who make those decisions.

I don't believe taxation can not be voted in by the people as it is the responsibility of the legislative branch to come up with the laws. Now the people can vote down the laws that they don't like by changing the constitution but they can't make new laws.

I would have never believed that the people would vote for higher taxes and no weed. It just tells you how well the people can be influenced by adds bought by people who want to swaw them.

I know this is not the right thread but here it goes, now potus trump can start back up new leases on wells and continue the building of the keystone pipeline now it should be changed to maga pipeline. Cut the budget on the epa and allow alternative energy infrastructure like nuclear, build gasification plants, and remove every windmill from the face of North Dakota.

I understand that taxes may never go down but allowing a tax freeze on property futures taxes could be a way to allow north dakota residents a way to get ahead. This bill will never happen in north dakota there is just too many moving parts for everyone to be satisfied with the results.

But we can share the tax wealth on the oil revenue like it was during the boom for all of north dakota and give the finger to the federal government oversight on what north dakota does with that revenue. I know that it doesn't help today but perhaps in the next north dakota budget proposal like increase in tax credit and freezing tax future for residential property could be a solution. Being proactive with those who have the power to make these decisions is the only way north dakota can come out ahead. I know one thing that's for certain our new governor will have no issues with signing a new bill that sees tax incentives for all of North Dakota.

^I might have the mid-afternoon brain drain but none of that made much sense to me.

How about no property tax on the first $200k valuation on your home? This would give big relief to residents, tighten the strings on the check writers, and keep the funding for what’s in place. No windfall for corporations and won’t blow up land values.

It won't. I said it was tax relief and not getting rid of the tax. You'd see relief since assessed value is 50% of market value. Unless you think the market in ND is going to skyrocket to all homes being worth millions.

So is implementing a tax freeze increase its done for those 65 and older, it's done for those on some sort in disability
Giving new business owners tax breaks on new construction has been going on for ever most tax breaks can be up to a decade.

The problem with “relief” is the tax collectors treat it as a supplement and not a substitute of taxes. Example…. I received $500 property tax reliefthis year….. my taxes also went up around $500. So we continue to pay the same or higher taxes yearly while they pocket the “relief”…… we are beyond relief. We are into hardcore reform territory.

What is a tax freeze increase? Homestead act? And yes, businesses get tax incentives for moving into a city. I'm confused where is this conversation going???

Agreed that was bullshit. I just think that if you can't tax the first 200k (or move that number around, just spitballing) not only would it deter overspending & provide relief, but would reign in ridiculous assessments as we'd all know that a singlewide next to the sewage plant isnt worth $450k.

The fact of the matter is local government has way too much power over the determination of property values where assessment can be done just by walking around your property. Property owners should be able to appeal the assessment by charging the county to hire your own independent assessor. If the assessment comes back lower than you should be locked in for that value for a longer period of time. All property assessment must be done while the home owners are there during the process and that assessor should be made available to answer questions on how they came up with that value when other owners increase where not valued accordingly by giving a favorable value for whatever reason.

Geezuz bravo seriously these are examples of how the tax infrastructure can be changed naturally within your own local area. The fact of the matter is you are not getting your way so you have those typical blinders on to real world examples of how tax relief can be given by those who make those decisions.
The reason why no property taxes in north dakota didn't pass is because not everyone should receive a tax break post 564 gives you very good examples why that is the case.
