Have three mares all due next week, well they decided to start early, one Friday, one yesterday and looks like one tonight or tomorrow! Makes for some long nights, but very happy with the outcome! Tomorrows should be a palomino or dun palomino?

Just thought I'd share my weekend!

Hope all the foals are healthy and hungry.

I remember growing up on the ranch, calving and 60+ mares having foals. Hated it them but I miss it now.

Calving out cows in this wind and cold sure hasn't been much fun the last 24hrs. Any of you that say you miss it can sure come and take the night shift.

If my body would allow it and you were near i would help you out in a heartbeat. Wasn't fun when you had a breech or a cow that wouldn't take the calf but i really do miss it.

Being 14 and the vet puts you to work holding the stuffings on a pro-lapsed cow because your the right height. Yeah I miss that a lot these last 55 years.;:;barf

Sawyer,
My most hated time of the year. I can't wait until dad fully retires and sells the rest.

Our place was between 7500' and 11000' depending on where you were at in southern CO. I know well the joy of 10-20* and a 30 mph wind while spending a year or two with a warm, friendly mother cow delivering a calf. Or delivering one while coyotes ate the underbelly out of a near by cow while she nurses.

But 45 years or so later I do miss those days and I hope you will too. If I was nearer and able I'd at least come out and keep you company and help where I could.

Yeah I priced them out too, but I'm to dam cheap to buy a system. Getting up and checking is way cheaper even though I complain about it!

Never lived on the farm but I claim that's where I "grew up". My uncle had a 50 cow dairy farm with an additional 50 head of beef. Several times we had to hook the heifer up to a pole and get a come along to the calves legs. Don't really miss that, but do miss dehorning and nutting. Watching my grandpa, uncle and I work together to hold a steer down the get the clippers and pinchers on is one of my best memories. Also pitching shit out of the calf room. Builds character they said...

Yeah, those work great IF you can get the DAMN COW into the barn!!!!! My uncles barn would hold about 10-12 cows at a time. He had 90 head to calf. Couldn't keep all of them even around the barn. To much mud and wet. Scours are a BITCH!!! Ah memories!!!
