As the title says we have caught a hawk that has a broken wing, it has been running around in the ditch about a mile from my house for several days so the wife and i just caught it a bit ago to take it to town in the morning.

Where would one drop it off to get fixed up, the zoo or the game and fish or some other place?

I'd call the zoo, probably before I evan tried transporting it as you may be breaking some law.

Call the game warden first so you are covered as far as the law is concerned. Depending on where you are the game warden will pick them up or will instruct you to call/take them to the local zoo.

Just got off the phone with our district warden and he said to release it and let nature run its course. Said they are so common they don't much worry about them and it is also a federal offense to have it even if we are trying to help it.

7.5 shot. Anything else starts costing more

Ha Ha you know how it goes when the wife saw it too and wanted to try and help lol.

Yep you are very lucky the game warden didn't give you a fine.
It is illegal to even have just a feather from a hawk/owl/raptor etc in your possession.
And the fines aren't cheap as it is a federal offense like you wrote.

Can you imagine if certain tree huggers heard this reality? Talk about blowing their minds

I took a snowy owl with a broken wing to the gfp office here they took it to a raptor place In Pierre and rehabbed it. I have no problem sharing a few pheasant with those cool birds. Rather they get them than sconis

Well thats just weird of ND G & F, other states have a vet you can take them to and the rehab it, then release it. Watch Northwoods Law, Maine and NH Game wardens take birds and wildlife to a special vet....wonder why north dakota doesn't follow suit. I guess here the motto of the G & F is "let nature take its course".

I suppose they're so plentiful that the cost isn't justified. Eagles and snowy owls on the other hand they'll probably spend the $ (maybe the feds?).

Our GNF leaves a lot to be desired at times. They'd rather shoot a moose or bear then try to relocate it.

Because we aren't a bunch of liberal tree huggers. Its a hawk for christ sake, they are more common than a fat chick at Bucks. Put it out of its misery and call it good.

Any idea on what goes in to darting and moving something like a moose or a bear? Or the idea of "habituation"? Cost/benefit analysis says taking them out is often the only feasible solution.

And raptors are regulated by the Feds, not the state. Might be a different outcome if you call USFWS
