It's real simple to me. The govt. can't allow independence of the govt. in any way, shape, or form. The easiest and most effective way to prevent independence is to tax and therefore severely curtail the financial ability of its citizenry to buy, build, or acquire anything that assists in becoming independent of govt. The more you labor to earn more money, the more money the govt. claims you owe them. Thus keeping your position as a productive serf maintained. If you can never eliminate govt from your life in any meaningful way, your slavery to the govt. is guaranteed. Tax your income, tax your purchases, tax any financial gains of any kind, tax your movements (gas tax), tax your land, etc, etc, etc. Also, keep in mind that any regulatory fees such as insurances, licenses, inspections, specials, mil levies, permits, etc, etc, etc are nothing more than additional taxes with more benign labeling and better marketing. Independence is kryptonite to govt. It's VERY hard to bully someone who doesn't need anything you offer.

Would we care about the valuation on our property increasing if property taxes weren't based on it?
If you have children, then yes. More family wealth can provide better lives to your present and future family members. If no children, then more wealth to provide more support to whatever cause/person/organization you deem worthy of support. Be it your church, college, etc.

Of course you would/should. It's an asset. It's an awful lot easier to get a Home Equity Line Of Credit to fund that $200k tritoon if your home is valued at $500k than it would be if it was still considered worth the $200k when you first bought it 20 years ago.

Right. So what we really don't like is that property tax is based on this imaginary valuation and we are suspicious that they keep raising the valuation just to pull in more taxes. I did call the Bismarck city assessor a few years ago and asked them if they take into consideration that our taxes will go up if they increase the valuation and of course, they said no. But it was somewhat believable because the valuation was based on properties that sold near me. So the main problem as I see it is that the valuation is used to calculate property taxes.

The more important question is, would the government continuously increase the value of your property if they could no longer tax you more based on it?
The government wouldn't be putting a value on your property at all of they weren't taxing it, they would have nor reason to go through that exercise.

before you point that out ND fit does not have that trend --- no and no its not that our housing is so cheap -- - its not any more - same with cost of living.

If and that is a big if ----prices fall i was told that i can get a private third party appraisal and the city will need to accept it.

Latest: the police get to put a big fence around their parking lot to avoid crime, panhandling, etc. basically the police cannot police their own parking lot. I cant put a fence in my front driveway though. It just keeps getting worse - glad i am on the back side.

Somebody that's conservative should write a reasonable bill that the majority will vote for . That's just how it works. Come up with a plan rather than giving MORE power to the Gov. and hoping they will do the right thing for the majority.
