It's real simple to me. The govt. can't allow independence of the govt. in any way, shape, or form. The easiest and most effective way to prevent independence is to tax and therefore severely curtail the financial ability of its citizenry to buy, build, or acquire anything that assists in becoming independent of govt. The more you labor to earn more money, the more money the govt. claims you owe them. Thus keeping your position as a productive serf maintained. If you can never eliminate govt from your life in any meaningful way, your slavery to the govt. is guaranteed. Tax your income, tax your purchases, tax any financial gains of any kind, tax your movements (gas tax), tax your land, etc, etc, etc. Also, keep in mind that any regulatory fees such as insurances, licenses, inspections, specials, mil levies, permits, etc, etc, etc are nothing more than additional taxes with more benign labeling and better marketing. Independence is kryptonite to govt. It's VERY hard to bully someone who doesn't need anything you offer.

Would we care about the valuation on our property increasing if property taxes weren't based on it?
If you have children, then yes. More family wealth can provide better lives to your present and future family members. If no children, then more wealth to provide more support to whatever cause/person/organization you deem worthy of support. Be it your church, college, etc.

Of course you would/should. It's an asset. It's an awful lot easier to get a Home Equity Line Of Credit to fund that $200k tritoon if your home is valued at $500k than it would be if it was still considered worth the $200k when you first bought it 20 years ago.

Right. So what we really don't like is that property tax is based on this imaginary valuation and we are suspicious that they keep raising the valuation just to pull in more taxes. I did call the Bismarck city assessor a few years ago and asked them if they take into consideration that our taxes will go up if they increase the valuation and of course, they said no. But it was somewhat believable because the valuation was based on properties that sold near me. So the main problem as I see it is that the valuation is used to calculate property taxes.

The more important question is, would the government continuously increase the value of your property if they could no longer tax you more based on it?
The government wouldn't be putting a value on your property at all of they weren't taxing it, they would have nor reason to go through that exercise.

before you point that out ND fit does not have that trend --- no and no its not that our housing is so cheap -- - its not any more - same with cost of living.

If and that is a big if ----prices fall i was told that i can get a private third party appraisal and the city will need to accept it.

Latest: the police get to put a big fence around their parking lot to avoid crime, panhandling, etc. basically the police cannot police their own parking lot. I cant put a fence in my front driveway though. It just keeps getting worse - glad i am on the back side.

Thank goodness we as a majority voted down the property tax elimination. Its gooder this way
Somebody that's conservative should write a reasonable bill that the majority will vote for . That's just how it works. Come up with a plan rather than giving MORE power to the Gov. and hoping they will do the right thing for the majority.

As far as I'm concerned those that are in over their head with property taxes dug the hole that they are currently in . I get it , but a lot of us arn't in that situation. It's not that I wouldn't like to help you out, Just come up with a solution that the majority can agree with. It seems like the majority has spoken and want a prognosis on how this is can fly without us paying more taxes to ease your tax burden.

Minot
Minot's city manager is proposing upping property taxes $250 to $350 per $100,000 of property value while also raising garbage\recycling rates and raising sewer rates for the 2027 proposed budget of $218 million. 🤬 🤬🤬

Because he doesn't want to use any reserve funds like they did last year., which they used $3 million.

Some city council members have already said they will not vote for that.

Ha ha we will see when it comes down to it, how this will be voted on by the council.

Maybe the city could save money by not jumping in with companies in building\remodeling things, shit they even hired a firm to evaluate all of Minot's streets, hell I would of did it riding around in my 3/4-ton pickup for the price of gas.

The no property tax bill was a joke. there was absolutely no plan to say where the money was going to come from if they abolished it. If you think they were just to do away with property tax and not need to make up that money, you are a complete idiot.
I guess I am an complete idiot. In fact now that we know I am the dumbest one in the room, I guess I vote that we raise all taxes, and feed everyone's kids 3 squares a day. Fuck it, no one really needs to retire, we just work until we no longer can, and toss us out to love island.

My little .5 acre in town lot pays for about 1,500 farm acres worth of revenue, so its obviously the best system ever to be instituted.

I love our quality learing centers, and of course medicare going everywhere but to the ones that earned it. More taxes, and fat kids will fix it all

I sure as heck don't need any help with any of my tax situation, and the burden is all of ours, actually its more on some of us than a lot of others of us, however it needs to be adjusted and rained in.
Its all our tax burden, or at least those of us that actually pay taxes.

I get that, but there are proper procedures to go through to do it RIGHT way not the wrong way so the majority will embrace it and pass it. We the people have to come up with a well thought plan how to dig into a small fraction of oil money and vote on it and force it upon them. Letting THEM decide is an accident waiting to happen. They will just cut funding for the things we enjoy. In spite.

Really don't know about ND oil money. But in MN back in the day the small towns around the Iron Ore Mines stuck it to the Company's and after a while they said screw it and shut down. Then the rest of MN taxpayers had to fund all the mining towns for the next 25 years. I get the difference between Oil and mining just throwing it out there

We have waited long enough for the "right" solution, just eliminate it at this point, its all just a shell game to grab more money from you.
I just heard on the radio that the month of May ND took in an additional 29 million in oil revenue because of the price of oil going up.
That's just neat, pack that away in the legacy fund and jack up our property taxes to pay for everyone's free lunch, and all the other socialist communist funds we now give to the "needy". We working tax payers just have to pay our "fair" share.

And the legistlature will never cut spending or funding, when was the last time that actually happened?
Forcing their hand would hopefully make them cut spending, and the free lunch program and busing should be the first out the door.
