I have a few 67 to 70 ski doo Olympics, also have a 73 alpine and a bombardier sw 48 fun to mess around with.

Do you know if there is an easy fix for a gas tank in an Olympic ? A 1967 followed me home a few years ago, It still looks like new but the tank gas tank leaks. I run it with a makeshift plastic gas jug but it looks like heck. Those are quite the sled, I watched the North pole expedition on tv in 68 and decided if they are that dependable I needed one The first winter I had it was a cold one so I tried to find a cold enough day that it wouldn't start and only once It wouldn't fire up but I tried again a couple hours later it started. The guys on the expedition were from MN.

The timing was right for the snowmobile industry, My dad and just about every other farmer had hitched the horses or strapped skis to their feet once too many when the snow got to deep for anything else. Designed and marketed as a tool but it turned into a recreation .

that is a problem with the original designed olys. I have welded the tank and coated it. big pain trying to rotate the whole sled to disperse the coating material. I did it by fixing the front of the sled to a engine stand then pick up the back of the snowcat and rotate while raising and lowering the rear of the sled. I have never done it but I saw on the internet where a guy cut the top out of the tank and installed a fabed up aluminum tank to sit in the old tank hole.
the beauty of the early ski doo is in deep snow they are like a big ski with a track

Cats had a rotary back in the day, It was a Wankel or wankle not sure how its "spelt". The rotax was a standard 2 cycle engine.

Never been around the rotary engines at all, or even heard one run. I like the concept but there must be a reason they are not common today.

They were a Wankel rotary motor. Buddy had a AC Lynx with one we got tuned up and running. It was funny how it would misfire when you hit a good bump. Not a real impressive motor.

No preference with sleds, I like them all but the older I get wide track and reverse is important . I am partial to twin cylinder Rockwell engines though , Mostly because I grew up around them and know them inside and out. They were tough as nails as long as you kept the hot side cool enough. I have a few of those salted away for projects, One is going in a 70 Evinrude wide track with reverse that has what we used to call the "pancake engine" with apposing cylinders , No power at all. Current project is a 68 Ski daddler that has a 540CC Motosacoche engine that was made in Switzerland, Curious to rear how it sounds and see what it has for power. It's fun stuff to tinker with in the winter.

OH MY....I believe we had a '69 like one below, first ever sled i drove as a kid, broke down like a zillion times but fun to ride

was it wide track ? 22''? Mine has the dual headlights with 22'' track , kind of looks like the big black Mercury back in the day. having a hard time finding decals , Might have to hand paint them unless someplace can custom make them.

can't remember what the track width was, but we having issues with the track in the rear, had one headlight, pretty much the same as the picture. With technology today, new stickers can pretty much be duplicated with a photo, and the sign shop can make them.

I had three 1972 Arctic EXT's. 340, 440 and a 650(less original motor). Rode them all hard and sold them way too cheap. Very disappointed with myself to this day. Started riding on a 1970 panther with a 372 JLO one lunger. I was only about 9 or 10 then. What a bitch to start. Dad wouldn't let me leave the yard until I was able to start it myself. Few El Tigre's in the later years. Still own a 98 ZL440, fast little sled.

Forgot to mention there's a couple facebook groups I'm in that you may be interested in. Old School Leafers and Vintage Snowmobile Lovers. The first one is more of a buy/sell group, the second is just some guy posting pictures of old sleds he took over the years. See a lot of stuff I never new existed. Lot of interesting old race sleds.

My spine still has bad memories of the old 1975 Merc 340 S/R I rode for many years as a young kid through college, dam thing probably still runs for all I know, I know I couldn't kill it and I tried really hard, one tough sled, a lot tougher than my spine for sure.
These are pics I stole from the web but identical to mine.
I have a friend who used to collect old Rupps, not sure if he still has them but he used to have 2-3 of them that were like new.
