The sloughs are not supposed to be full this time of year. We live in a semi-arid climate where sloughs and dugouts fill early in the year because of melting snow on frozen ground, and then we evaporate off 30-40 some inches of moisture over the rest of the open water season.

Having sloughs full going in the fall is a recipe for farmers to lose adjoining acres of pasture and cropland the next spring.

By filling I mean there is no water in them. Even in years when it was a big winter the only thing farmers lost around here was the low areas that should never be watered la red any way. The one slough I train on is about three inches deep while when not in a drought is swimming water for the dog. That recipe is what is needed for the ducks to come back.

While there's a bit of a line of rain shower and thunderstorms moving across ND right now, one might want to keep an eye on the sky late this afternoon and on into the early evening:

Was by Mcintosh sd this morning and it poured. We are getting really dry again down here so could use some good rain. Not one drop of water in blue blanket down here and thats a main water body for the fall migration
