I agree. No dog in this fight. Sounds similar in some ways to the food tax vote coming up in SD.

My .02 is that you’re eliminating a tax, but putting the government in a place to make up new ones to cover their costs. I hope it works out, but I don’t know if what you’ll get will be better or worse. Good luck!
It scares the dickens out of me just thinking that people are putting this must trust in legislators . it's a No vote from me, I don't trust em that much.

Oh man, here we go….i’m a no vote for the property tax measure. It’s too vaguely written and benefits corporate businesses and the like. I can’t argue with the over taxation of our residential properties, but to rid our state of property taxes in the way this bill was written is foolish. There are too many outside interest groups pushing for it. That should raise a red flag. My hope is that it’s voted down by the people and the ND elect sees that changes must be made and do so accordingly in this year’s legislative session. If they fail to do so, then let’s vote on a measure that addresses what’s best for every resident and community we call home. This measure is sexy to most, but it’s brush stroke is too wide. A yes vote with how this measure is written will create more harm than good. I completely agree with less taxes, less spending, and less government, but we have to use sensible logic to accomplish this.

I am not for and never will be for replacing one tax with another. There has to be answer for how will we pay for the things that are needed upfront instead of afterwards.

I hope this measure up for a vote sends that message……..

KW is 100% right on what he just wrote. This measure needs to be rewrote and come back to a vote again and the legislature needs to know that it will if they don't anything about it this session

A yes vote excludes Walmart, Menards, Holiday Inn, you name it from paying property taxes. Out of state land investors will target residential, commercial, and agricultural lands to name a few. Again, this measure is dangerous.
Our legislature can make a new tax to cover those situations. VOTE YES!

Isn't this what was said in 2019 when we voted on it and it didn't pass?

most of them already have tax exempt deals to come to certain cities, and out of state land buyers have been scooping up land for a while now.

Re-watched the debates since I’m home with a sick kid. In plain English, there is no mechanism in place for the subs to get funding in the language. In the Dr. Becker vs Bob Harms debate around the 1:05:00 mark, Dr. Becker says that to fund increases, these subs will require the legislate to reconvene, and levy for more of your money for municipal operations and infrastructure upkeep, quote: “and do we call that a property tax, I don’t know”. So again, this is not voting to get rid of a tax, it’s a tax shift. With no plan. The very next part of the video it’s clear that they can still asses a property tax based on your square footage, so it’s going nowhere. If you were as fired up about this measure as you should have been during June elections, where you could have actually voted out these commissioners, park and school board members (who actually do control your property tax, voter turnout averages 20% by the way, so you could have won). I hate the I got mine so screw the kids mentality. Things cost more than they used to. Someone paid for the school you went to, too. Maybe they didn’t reach civics.

If anything site is exhibit A why measure 4 should be defeated. We need all the money going to education we can find. Anyway here I go asking questions before we put permanent ink to paper and make a short-sighted idea a law, aka fear-mongering.
dumping more money into education isnt helping, the more we throw at it the worse outcomes we are getting. Its not a money problem imo. Private schools provide better educations often with significantly less funding / student. Public education needs significant reform. Teachers need to be measured objectively, and teachers who arent performing need to be replaced.

No vote from me. This is a very poorly written bill with a lot of unknowns. The current property tax is the devil we know. To say that they will cut spending and find a way to make up the difference, is completely laughable and fairy tale shit.

Judging by the poll on this site only 25% will vote no. Wonder if this mentality will carryover to the general population of ND….. thats a pretty wide margin

I don’t disagree with most of what you said. But where do you find replacements? Education majors are declining at every college. Why would you want to teach when you get paid dog shit and are viewed as poorly as most educators are these days? As someone who was in the profession and left, I’d never, ever encourage someone to teach. And that sucks because I have young kids. But if you have talent, you damn well better go somewhere else and get paid for it. I did and don’t regret it. 90% of education costs go to salaries….and nobody is getting rich (other than the superintendents). If you want the best, talented people teaching your kids, you better figure out how to pay what they’re worth. Currently education is competing with Walmart with a far higher entry cost for employees.

while I will vote yes, it is likely that the measure will fail and that the legislature will do nothing to provide meaningful property tax relief. Sen Dick Dever's letter in today's Bismarck rag supports my belief. Dever suggests that the legislature has provided meaningful property tax relief. Once again, our super majority suggests that throwing $$ at something is the same as fixing it. It is Not (IMO).

Apparently the voters in your district disagreed. I also hope your taxes go up by 50%, maybe you’ll get to vote out the big spenders.
I have tried…at least I am willing to try for a change…

It will probably not pass..to many people think the state is who will make the decision on funds(it won’t) locals still control the money. Probably would have to be smarter with the money since they will have to ask the public for more if it’s needed. I believe I read something that said the average increase in property tax was 7% the last 3 years in ND and the average sale price of a house has gone up 10%. The people that vote this down, and I know mine will go due to this, but I truly do hope your taxes sky rocket(even more). I can afford mine even with substantial increases but the real question is..can you continue to afford yours even with $500 here and there the state throws at you for appeasement? Remember you can do nothing about your property taxes. If shifted to a sales tax as an example you can CHOOSE to spend less money during hard times therefore reducing liability. Property taxes..nope you are stuck.

Not saying this is all cases..I know a few teachers making 60-70k a year. 9-10 months at 60-70k isn’t to bad($6,700 a month). I know starting teachers just out of school take a hit, but who doesn’t when you start in your career field? I know engineers that got out of school with 110k in student loans and made 50k a year until they had a number of years in with experience. The one thing I can say is dealing with some of the kids at schools they could never make enough…
