oh, so now were back on to shifting the tax burden to the backs of those that "can afford" to pay. why not just go full socialism...........................................unbelievable.

IMO -- we are at full socialism. This bill will increase taxes on fuel, whiskey, beer, income taxes huge increase, sales tax increase (which is way to high) alll this does is cut into my fishing budget. #bluestatebound #walzrunningourstatenowomg:( I dont own a mansion like the doctor promoting this, sounds like doc and his real estate buddies have an agenda. Just another typical politician.

West fargo added another 1/2 percent to sales taxes to pay for more cops/fire. Like they dont get enough from homeowners the way it is.

So fckng stupid

The key to all of this is to reduce expenses. Until that is addressed nothing will change you will just pay the tax another way. What the fuck does it take for all of you to understand that. The doc laughed at me its all a big shell game. I am glad i dont have that many years left.

Ha ha you guys saying eliminate property taxes are screwed up in the head. They will just come up with another way/tax to get your money.

I already get screwed on the no state tax thing they just passed. Just because I make over the limit they set I still have to pay 1.5 % while someone that makes under the limit doesn’t have to pay any state tax.
Maybe they should focus this energy on putting a cap or freeze on property tax increases. This would force them to be more efficient with the budget and would’nt be able to jack it up with little repercussions

Sunsetting a legacy system combined with term limits seem to me like a way to give more control back to the current voting public.

Few thought the medicinal marijuana bill would pass either. Personally, I would have wrote the initiative to eliminate them on one’s primary residence. That would pass quite easily I’m sure.
Exactly, If they wrote the bill like that it would pass with 80% of the vote

eliminate them on your primary residence? someone touched on it. so, now my business owner, lake owner, farm owning, vacation home owning, etc... neighbors pay for my roads, schools and parks?

state sales tax? what do you figure the state, city & county increase would have to be in order to cover what property taxes cover? a part of me says all of them combined would be in the 20% range. can you imagine what sort of a disadvantage that would put north dakota businesses at? especially in border towns. you would literally watch the exodus of business owners and consumers across state lines in real time.

also this has been touched on too... property taxes exist in every single state. do you think that's cause every city, county and state government in the country are full of left leaning idiots? no... its cause over centuries, even the best and brightest haven't been able to come up with a better system. believe it or not, we used to have the best and brightest working on these issues. not so much anymore. in fact, i might argue the exact opposite these days. can you imagine leaving it up to those we currently have in government (will be an even higher turnover now) to fix a system that's been developed over 125+ years in a matter of a year or two? talk about FUBAR.

i am in the exact opposite as the most of you. i was all for this the first time around. now that i've gotten to understand the system, how it functions and how it came to be the way it is today, i am totally against eliminating property taxes. i think we could fix more than a few things and figure out how to cut spending. but, eliminate them entirely? nope.

also... legacy fund to replace it? also, touched on. i am ok with the idea of the legacy fund as a safety net of sorts for when the oil runs out. but, not for simply paving roads, paying for schools, parks or whatever all over the state for whoever has the most clout in bismarck.

the one thing that really held water with me before was the "own your property" thing. in fact, it still does. i am not a fan of the idea that the government can take your house if you can't pay property taxes. but, honestly it rarely happens. and honestly, there is a mechanism and many reasons for why it works that way. without spending an hour typing, i will just say that "i get it" now and have accepted it.

After watching them go ballistic with the increase in property taxes over the years so they can spend like a bunch of idiots, NO f-ing way.....gut the whole dam system. It will take decades before I accept and get used to the thrusting in and out, in and out, over and over again.

Property taxes have become too easy of a mechanism for the tax spenders to get money from the tax payers. I have been paying them for 30 years and didn't complain (much) for the first 20 years but it has gotten out of hand now. There is no accountability. They simply raise the assessed value of your home and send you a bigger bill. It's too easy. My prop taxes have increased 10.5% and 10% in the last 2 years. The increases used to be manageable and inline with inflation, not that way anymore. I am ready for a new approach.

its not the system that's broke. its the spend spend spend folks WE all keep electing to operate in that system. WE elected them. they didn't put themselves in office. WE keep voting for new and bigger schools. make no mistake about it. eliminating property taxes won't eliminate the spending. they will get their money one way or the other. and back to the "own your property" thing... lets say we eliminate property taxes. but, now that same owner can't pay the outrageous whatever tax or bill they implement to replace it. guess what the first thing is they are gonna come for once they get a judgment against you? #1 your income i suppose. but, a close 2nd will be your home. just like any judgment debtor.

There is one if not two states that do not have a property tax. Exactly who I can’t remember off the top of my head

Nobody even know how many tens of billions of surplus funds the state has hoarded away now. There isn’t one tax that you would want to impose to replace property taxes. Like I pointed out you can take half of the property tax collection right off the top and not worry about that dollar a pine because it’s education and that is supposed to be funded by the common lands school trust. So now they would have to figure out funding for what would have been half of normally property tax collections. So the problem is only half as big as people think. Roads need to be funded via fuel tax like their supposed to be. Instead of the legislature using it as they see fit, a big chunk of the fuel tax collected should be sent back to the counties. Same with the sales tax collected. Perfect example is Williston. For quite a number of years we had the highest sales tax collections and don’t get shit back. The whole damn system needs an overhaul

This is the situation we need to put these politicians in. Make their decesions have consequences. Are they willing to kill the business owners. 20% Hell no! A percent or two, yes. Take their unlimited check book away.

Make them make decisions. This is how it always has been done doesn't fix a dam thing.

I think what people are referring to in property tax elimination is strictly residential primary residence(ND resident). I know this is picking and choosing as Allen stated before that could open up issues, who knows. I believe that is where most people are looking at.

i was just doing some research on al gores interweb and every state has at least some property tax. ranging from .28% to 2.49% of actual value. average/year ranges from $600 to 5400. we are slightly above the mean at #29 w/ about 1% of value and 2100/year. some states do get creative when it comes to relief for the elderly, disabled, veterans, etc... though. no clue what we do in that regard other than the homestead credit of course. which applies to 65+ and disabled folk

“Property taxes have gone up, like, 600% on the lake cabin in 20 years. Obviously, the property isn’t worth 600% more than we paid for it,” said Patrick Sanders of Bismarck.
That’s why former state representative Rick Becker is hoping to do something about it.

“We are looking at putting a measure on the ballot in 2024 that will eliminate all property taxes. That’s number one; number two, it would require the legislature to replace what was generated in property tax revenue by all the cities and counties,” said Becker."

Copy and paste from news article, This has probably been mentioned but can you imagine how much land value would go up and how attractive ND would be for out of state people to move here ? Or that the biggest farmers who have more money and land than they already know what do do with will gobble up every acre they can find and then be forced to keep buying more to offset income tax. There are a lot of long term possibilities to consider here besides the property taxes that us small operators and owner will save. This bright idea has the potential to turn into a disaster.

Farm land is not taxed at the rate city land is, not even close, which is understandable, as that would not be doable for the farm, well guess what it isn't doable for the city fella either.

I feel like taxing is a necessary evil to keep the luxuries we all enjoy, such as police and fire protection, paved roads, public schools, etc. But somewhere there has to be a way to get this funded without being punished for taking stake in our state and cities.

Rick is onto something, there has to be a better way.
